We are about to spent the next 2 months travelling to Broome via Darwin from Brisbane towing a jayco outback expanda. At the moment the patrol is mainly stock standard but I am thinking of putting in a 2 inch lift kit and changing tyres to something that will handle the dirt a little better. We intend to do the Gibb river road on the way back and wonder if the old ball hitch will cope or if we need to change this as well and if we go to a off road coupling and if this coupling works with a load levelling device or do we change it before we tackle the Gibb? Of course we intend to do this in 3 weeks time, nothing like spur of the moment! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Put a set of BFG A/T's on it and away you go.

Will go where you want and use the money for the trip.

Lots do all this lifting etc and then really never need it

You can use a WDH with an offroad hitch Just remove it before any radical off road stuff

Gibb road travellers will set you right

snoopyone;

thanks, from what I now gather it shouldn't be too much of an issue on the GRR without a offroad hitch. I will look into tyre choice

Mike,
We did the GRR a couple of years back in a 100 series Landcruiser towing a 19' van.
The LC was at standard height and we had no problems at all.
The vans we have had/got have all been fitted with an off road hitch, but it's not necessary to have one, the standard ball is sufficient and no doubt many have been across the GRR without any problems, as they all say, a little air out of the tyres and reduce your speed and drive to the conditions.
It's a great area enjoy the trip.
Cheers

Baz,

doing the GRR with a standard height 4wd is great to know. My wife will be disappointed though. She uses it to ferry the kids into remote scout camp sites and the like and was hoping for a positive response about getting a lift kit. We are only going on holidays so I get to drive it on the dirt. I might just be able to buy her some pearls in Broome with the money saved. Should keep her happy.
Thanks
Mike
