Hello Folks.
Was wondering if someone could help me out please to put a value on a 1991 GQ Patrol Wagon 5sp 4.2D. It is very tidy inside and out but has a blown motor that has been cooked. Is it worth the the trouble? Are they a good vehilce and do they have some faults to look out for?

Cheers Adrian.

Price a replacement motor first.. see if you can find one.

Rebuild will be around $5000-8000 depending on what it needs... Martyn did his not long ago, also depends if you are rebuilding it or a shop.

What flavor is it?? ST Ti DX etc??

Any extras?

www.redbook.com.au for a value, but I think around $5-8k would be all its worth.

Do you know what happened to cook it?

Adrian,

The GQ is a very reliable very capable 4WD. When I sold mine it had 385000km on th clock and was going well. I did have a few problems that were directly related to the fact that it hd worked very hard fo a good portion of it's life. The 2nd owner was a 4WD Mag.

I would ask two questions at least. 1:- How many km has it done?
2:- Why did the engine blow?
You say it was cooked, overheating can be a problem with these vehicles but to go so far as to blow the motor suggests that the owner was not very kind to the thing generally and probably abused it in other ways as well.

It could be a good buy or it could be a nightmare! Get quotes for the repair and for a new motor and add that to the purchase price. Is it still cheap?

There are plenty of these cars around many have done little or no off road work and would make excellent touring vehicles at an affordable price.

Personally I'd be very careful.

It's a ST and the motor was cooked, broken fan belt so I was told, woman driver.
But the body and inside the cabin are in very good nik and there is no rust because it's lived all it's life west of the divide.Would be very tempting at the right price.

Cheers Adrian.

I have heard this one before about the fanbelt and wife...

Who was it.. here or on Patrol4wd or GQ list??

Again, see what price a second hand donk will cost you.. Or maybe consider a V8 Chev Diesel conversion for around $14k... Thats a new donk fitted etc.

They are pulling $13-18k with rego, and good motor.
