I have a 2006 turbo diesel with only 125,000ks which has just developed a small shudder in the transmission. It is only on take off in 1st and reverse and is more pronounced when i have a trailer on. Has the trans seriviced and new filter to no no avail. Does not slip or seem to have any other problems. Have spoken to 4 very good Toyota mechanics and they have never seen this problem. Does anyone have any ideas.
Looking forward to every weekend being a looong weekend

Had a mate with exactly the same symptoms in his 06 Cruiser.
Advised him to change the oil in the rear Diff (LSD) and it fixed the problem. Toyota told him the same story as they did you.

hi maccax7
sounds like clutch shudder
could be a small amount of oil /grease on the clutch plate try putting it in 3rd gear in stationary position and apply light brake pressure and ride the clutch for just 5 seconds

(and i dont mean until smoke starts belching out of the housing- lol)

sometimes this will dry the clutch plate and get rid of the oil/grease off the clutch plate surface
this has worked for me a couple of times and the shudder has gone away cheers

Not silly as it sounds - shudders often emanate from the torque converter where the lockup plates can bind when not locked up causing the shudder.

Also auto gearboxes should not just have the oil changed - it should be double flushed to remove as much as the old oil as possible. A single flush leaved a fair bit of the the old oil in the box - particularly in the TC.

I'd be looking at the common factors, seeing you have it in reverse too - years back, I had similar in a new fourbie - was the LSD diff - it eventually settled in and went away - being a Toyota and with your odo reading, the vehicle is near new anyway :-o) ........as suggested above, different lubes (within spec of course) in the transfer and diffs might be fruitful. While you are under there, a lube and inspection of all propellor shaft hardware would be indicated it seems.

and........Love it Axle - (dealer mechanic ......"haven't heard of that before")..... hear it all the time (or did - haven't been near a dealer for years - hope never to go again !).

have you recently greased up the drive shaft? too much grease in the yoke will give a slight vibration for a while.

Hi All, and thanks for your replies. The mechanics I spoke with were privates, not the dealer oneS. I haven't used them for many years also. The suggestion on the tranfer case oil is a possibility, as i have done all the others. I have it booked in for a servive this week, so will have it changed then and report back.
Have a great week.
