FUEL GAUGE LIGHT ON 2005 TOYOTA PRADO 3L TURBO DIESEL???

Purchased a 2005 Toyota Prado GXL 3L T/D just this week and the 90L light is constantly showing on the fuel gauge. Have read the owners manual and our interpretation of how the combined 180L fuel tank works doesnt equate to why the fuel light is continually on?

Since collecting vehicle on Fri with an almost empty tank and the 90L light ON, we have put in 2 x 50 litres of diesel and have seen the fuel gauge go to full thinking that the light would disappear until we are below the 90L mark but even with the needle on FULL the 90L light is still showing? Would just like to hear from any owners of same vehicle to possibly provide us with an accurate explanation as to how we should be reading the fuel gauge and light?

fill the tanks completely and see if the light goes out. The tanks on the Prado automatically 'switchover' when the main tank is empty, the needle returns to the full position because the tank you have switched is full.

You may not have enough fuel in it to click it over to the main.

thats exactly it, you'll need to make sure you have more than 90L in there and I suggest if you are only putting 50L in at a time you are probably not putting enough in. You will notice if you have filled it up enough to use the 2nd tank the needle will go down to 1/2 full and then flick back up to full and the 90L light will come on.

Hi Just Goin

If you have read the owners manual, you should be aware the 90 litre light will be on continuously until you have more that half a tank of fuel - over 90 litres in total capacity.

When on trips and when you are using a good amount of fuel, this is how our fuel gauge works.

With a completely tank full of fuel, the fuel gauge will work as normal until around the half empty mark, which at that this point the needle will go back to the full position and then the 90 litre green lamp will come on, indication that you now have 90 litres of fuel or less available to use. From this point on the needle will drop as normal and show you just how much fuel is left in the tank, and the green 90 litre light will only go out when you put more than 90 litres of fuel back into your vehicle.

We have found the gauge to be reasonably accurate and on one of our remote desert trips, when where there was no ability to purchase any fuel, we arrived into Laverton and proceeded to put 175 litres of diesel into our Prado, which was a very expensive fill up. For this very reason, we always have a full tank of fuel at all times, and this stops the initial big drain on the wallet.

If the fuel tanks in the Prado are nearly empty and you put in 100ltrs not all of it will go into the main tank. Probably 50ltrs will go into the main tank and 50ltrs into the second tank. This will not allow the the 90ltr light to go out. Go to a Petrol Station and fillup and I'm sure the light will go out. It will not come back on until you have used all the fuel in the main tank.

The 2005 120 actually draws all its fuel from the front tank. There is no "switchover" from the sub to main per se. What happens is the fuel is constantly transferred from the sub tank to the main via a jet pump, keeping it full until the sub is empty.

I'm not quite sure how the gauge logic works, but I imagine it's something to do with either the fuel senders or float switches controlling the 90 light, etc.

Thanks all....yes all makes sense as we thought and as per manual etc...the 100L in total we have put in was just a guesstimate but it would be more than but not a completely full tank...No we would never usually put 2 x 50L lots of fuel it was just the way things worked out when we collected the car and then visited a fuel station ourselves shortly after leaving toyota....

Anyhow the fuel gauge hitting and staying on full for quite some kms while the 90L is still on is what was confusing for us...obviously there was more than 90L in the tank and the car was full on the gauge yet the 90L light was still showing....anyhow will do the complete fill up the tank and see if the light goes out...

Jarse - thanks for your comments - we were told exactly this from Toyota at the time of purchase - the main tank and sub tank is no longer with the model we purchased - YOU dont phyically switch anything over on the model we now own - it just draws from the one big tank per se....just fill up the tank and both tanks fill up evenly and draw evenly or so is our understanding - anyhow the light issue should be fixed if we fill it up as per all your valuable posts.
