I understand all of the above better than you probably imagine, but as I said, don't shoot the messenger. Imagine what it is like for a tour company, we have less freedom than the average citizen, but most of us do more to educate the average citizen about care for the wilderness than the Parks who charge us more than the average citizen, for the privilege of being told where we can't go.
By way of example. captain Billy's landing on
Cape York, been going there since 1970's before it was National Park and when it took 4 hours with a chainsaw to get there. Blokes like me in the 1970s and 80's kept that place going as an attraction and told many others about it and how to care for it.
Now Parks charge me a squillion every year for a Commercial Operators License, tell me I can't
camp at
Fruit Bat Falls or many other
places, I can
camp at Capt Billy (thanks). On top of the license fee, I get charge a per person part day or full day access fee- Joe Citizen doesn't, and I get charged the camping fee, and if I was silly enough to not pay, I'd cop a $3000 fine.
So I turn up at Capt Billy one year, been staying there every year a couple of times per year and been about the only ones there, but now thanks to the internet, there are 25 vans and campers and about 60 people there. The
toilet can handle 15 per day.
When I arrive, the
Ranger is there, we knew that anyway because he overtook our convoy on the way in. Poor bugger is dealing with the overflowing
toilet. Now I have nothing against the rangers, just the system.
I say G'day to him and point out that all the fireplaces are full, "can i place a fire on the concrete slab if I clean up afterwards?" I ask.
"Sure" he says obligingly.
I begin setting up, but all my convoy are still up at the
lookout taking photos. The crowd in the
campground has seen us arrive. Three big burly blokes walk up, posturing threateningly. "What are you doing?" one of them asks.
"Setting up camp" I reply.
"How many of you are there?" he asks
" Seven vehicles"
"Bloody hell! You blokes come in here and think you can take over the joint" he says angrily?
" What? Mate I am minding my own business setting up my
camp, I think it is you who thinks he owns the joint" I reply.
I then go on to explain the economics, how we pay a fortune to be told where we can't
camp. I say " All you have to pay is the camping fee of $4.50 a night, and looks to me like you've been here a week, bet you haven't even paid that"
He walked away.
The
Ranger comes up to me does the usual license
check and other things- any breach can cost me my license and a heap of money. I ask if he has checked the fee box, He says he has and despite there being about 60 people in the
camp, there is not even ONE dollar in the box!
I could go on...much more happened afterwards.
