Little Stick "Floats" between 4H & 4L Plain

The "little" stick on my 3l Hilux Diesel "floats" in the plain between 4H and 4L. Doesn't affect the range you select but when in 4H the level "floats" across to the L range plain and gets in the way of the gear stick when changing into 2nd gear. Not sure what is going on, is there a tensioning spring that would hold the lever in one spot. ie the 4H position? Any clues would be appreciated.

In the gear box on our 4 Runner there is a type of spring that sits in the top of gearbox sort of jammed in place by the selector top plate, this holds the lever in position.Might be the same type of setup in your bus?
