Need some help trouble shooting

I have a 1996 Fiat/New Holland Tractor (Iveco 4l Diesel) which won't turn over on the key. (It is 4wd so this question isn't really off topic)

It just clicks when the key is turned to "start"
Must be a bad earth I though, been caught like that before. So I have checked and cleaned all the battery connections and earth.

It turns over just fine if I short out the terminals on the starter motor but not on the key.

Any idea on where the problem is, what should I check next? The only auto elec in the area can't look at it for a week.

There are no electronics on this strictly old school mechanical stuff only.

hi
in addition
also have a look at the key switch and wiring could be a loose terminal /wire there did it just come on suddenly or has it been hit and miss for a while
if so may even be the key switch failure and or selenoid cheers

Good thought Barry about the key switch I'll have look

It's been as reliable as anything till now. Funny thing was it had been sitting for about two weeks, then this morning I went to use it, checked the oil then started it normally, moved it a few feet so I could open the bonnet to check coolant.

Then went to restart ....no go as described.

Cheers

Chris

Hi Gone Tropo,
If you have started it by shorting the contacts on the solenoid at the starter then the problem is not there. try looking at the wiring or key switch.

Try shorting the contacts on the back of the key starter. if it is not faulty wires then probably dirty or burnt out contacts in the key unit.

Cheers, Bruce.

Thanks everyone for the advice.

It ended up being dirty contacts at the back of the key switch, as normal it was the last thing I looked at cleaned etc.

Ah well at least all the other contacts got a bit of a service, think I'll call it preventative maintainence.

At least everything on these things is easy to get at and to pull apart.

Starts like a new one now.

I'm off to do some slashing now

Cheers

Had the same thing on a boat ignition last month, just replaced the ignition barrel as it was 25 years old.
