Hi everyone, I'll be driving up to
Canberra for the first time and was hoping to receive some general advice for safety.
It appears that the weather is unusually cold this winter with snow. Would the drive up (through Hume) involved snow or ice sleet?
Also, should I be particularly concerned with antifreeze considering it's sub-zero?
Thanks as I'm completely new to long-distance cold weather driving.

I wouldn't be worrying about the conditions on the Hume Hwy. (I had to do a double take as there is actually a suburb in
Canberra called Hume)
I lived in
Canberra for nearly 5 years and never had any problems. If your car isn't going to be parked undercover then just have a credit card or something similar to scrape any ice off. Oh, don't chuck hot water over the windscreen and people used to do from time to time.
If you want a more enjoyable drive than the dead boring / sleep inducing Hume Hwy you could try going through Gippsland to Cann River and then turn left and head north through Bredbo,
Nimmitabel,
Cooma etc. slightly shorter, time roughly the same but a hell of a lot more enjoyable.

Could also go up through
Buchan to Jinderbine and on to
Canberra.

Even though there has been a few - 5,6,7s over the past week, its not enough to worry about. Its the cold that comes up from the ground that is the problem.
Just ensure that your coolant is of the anti-freeze type, and if possible park under some sort of cover, tree etc.

Hi Tray,
The snow has been on the higher mountains. It seldom snows in
Canberra to the point where the snow settles. Yes there can be heavy frosts so make sure you have anti-freeze. The worst thing you might encounter, safety wise is thick fog that can hang over the Hume highway, and not just in
Canberra. I have driven almost all the way from
Canberra to Wagga Wagga in thick fog, although that was later in winter. Strictly speaking winter doesn't start until June!
The worst part of the Hume Highway drive is the number of trucks you will encounter although for most of the way its dual carriageway. Just be patient on the single carriageway sections
Cheers,
Val

If you stick to the Hume you will have no problems as it avoids the high atitude areas. We do
Bathurst to Melbouirne in 9 hrs including meal breaks so its not a biggie.
Cheers Pete
