Hi all

Looking for new tyres for the camper trailer. Didn't want to spend too much so the dealer has recomended Merit tyres 31x10.5 R15 LT construction 6ply rated. I know they're Chinese as are a lot of tyres nowdays, but at $140 they seem a reasonable buy. Has anybody got any experience with Merit tyres, as I've never heard of them before.

Thanks Jon

Gday
I have Chinese tyres on my Nissan . They have been up in the bush a few times and to work for daily runs. They are now six mths old and had no problems. Just be a bit careful when it is wet, they seem to be a bit slippery .

"but at $140 they seem a reasonable buy", what makes them a reasonably buy.... if your comparing them with another cheap $140 tyre then they will be OK.

And if they are no good thats's what you get for $140.

Everyone has there own idea what makes a good tyre and a good tyre to one may be a bad tyre to another and vise versa.

Merit tyres are made by "Hercules Tire and Rubber Company" in the USA.

Thanks olcoolone for your reply. By a reasonable buy I was referring to the fact that it was a cheap price for that size tyre but was after some feed back on the quality of them. I know that with a lot of products you get what you pay for, but as these tyres are an unknown make to me I was after other peoples experiences with them so that I could make an informed decision on whether they represent a reasonable buy or not.

Once again I thank you for taking the trouble to reply.

Have a look at the Ironman LT65's. A good ATR tyre at a reasonable price that have performed well on outback roads.

Ironman are also made by Hercules funnily enough.
I run Hercules terra trac MT's on the colorado. I'm on my second set and will buy them again. I've no doubt that the merit's will be just fine.

Hullo Jon

I guess if it were me I would be considering factors like -
* the weight of the C/T - eg, if it is 1500kg then the axle weight is equivalent to those on the towing vehicle - and if so, what is the load rating, is it L/T, etc.
* what is the cost of the C/T - is it a low cost one or does it represent a significant investment ($20 000+)?
* do I spend money insuring the C/T? If yes, how much?
* does it have the same rims and tyres as the towing vehicle?
* would I put these on the towing vehicle?
* what would I be thinking about my decision if a tyre failure on the C/T had major consequential costs or safety implications?

In other words, in fitting these tyres, am I increasing the (avoidable) risk and is it really false economy?

Cheers
Andrew
