How have you coped while on the road or waiting for your dental appointment. Here's somethig which is working for me. First method, suffer more temporary pain by swilling warm/ hot tea over the aching tooth, thereby triggering the bodies own pain dulling chemicals.Warning, pain levels can make your eyes water before the relief floods in. Not enjoying this one bit I decided there must be another way. Warm/hot cask red wine might just work given that the 9.5% alcohol would have antiseptic qualities. Heated up a couple of mouthfuls in a cup in the microwave and swilled it over the complaining tooth, with minimal pain increase and HEY, GUESS WHAT, no pain within minutes and that was 24 hours ago. Warm rotgut red tastes better warm too. Thought I would share this with you in case analgesics were not available. Four days to my dental appointment.

I use oil of cloves. Warning - sustained use can burn your mouth and cause ulcers

Try Oil of Clove on a cotton bud/gauze against the offending tooth, should do the trick until you can get in to have your Dental issues sorted by a Dentist :)

There is a toothpaste called Sensodyne - readily available from chemists, it includes a mild anaesthetic that quickly quietens down a nagging tooth. Not a permanent fix, but provides relief for an hour or so. Just smear a little on the bad tooth.

Cheers

Farmboywa

I always thought red wine had medicinal properties. Another use has surfaced besides being antioxidant.

Thankyou for the advice and I will ensure I take it each day, just in case!

As others have said: oil of cloves: still available in bush stores even though not normally listed for First Aid Kits, because longer-term use (by characters afraid of th edentist) will "dry out" the tooth roots and that will cause ulcers, loss of tooth etc.

However, I've used it over a 6-8 day period (dab a drop on your finger and rub it on the offending gum line) and it works wonders.

Carry a little bottle (50 mils or so??) in your Kit - Lasts forever.

The last time I had a severe toothache I got some dental floss and manage to get some left over food bits out of the painfull but hard to get to spot. Within minutes the pain stopped.

G'day Rob, I believe dental floss has germ killing qualities and probably did for you what the wine/alcohol swill did for me. Will use floss when there is no red wine.

If you've watched the movie 'The Marathon Man' with Dustin Hoffman and Sir Laurence Olivier in it, they too used oil of cloves to good affect after the dental torture scene.

Ouch!!!!

Hi Farmboywa, a very timely thread for me at the moment, I too am struggling with toothache but unlike you I seem to be haunting the Dentists but they can't find any problems. I've tried lots of things including sensodyne toothpaste with no success. I am however using blue listerine which does help temporarily but I'm not happy with it as it is supposed to be carcinogenic so I intend to have a go with the wine. Thanks for the thread.

Cheers

G'day Dunworkin(WA), don't want to send you into a panic, but I do recall reading jaw pain can be associated with heart problems. Might be worth a visit to your GP.

Thanks again.

If a long way from anywhere (but on the coast) the flesh from a blow fish, raw held between the tooth and gum will kill the pain. Then spit it out. Eating it may kill you.

Use only if very despirate and outback fishing trip.

G'day carlsp, sounds like good bush medicine for the experienced. Do you know how often you can repeat the process without poisoning yourself or someone else?

Sorry no, the main poison is in the liver of ther fish not the flesh part but there is still a risk if doing this too often.

Bonjela works well and will make the area around the tooth go numb.

When I lived in the Territory, we used to go on bush tucker trips as part of the school cultural program. On one trip they said that chewing the white inner end of a pandanus frond (chew not swallow) helped to alleviate toothaches. This had the result of making the whole mouth go numb which shut us kids up for a while. I still wonder if it was a deliberate ploy by our guide...

Regards
David

G'day Grungle, chewing the white inner end of a pandanus frond seems like more good bush medicine. I need to ask if your guide, whom I will assume was indiginous to the area, gave any indication how many times within a certain time frame you could safely chew the pandanus.
