I am looking for a Next G phone that I can buy outright with the following specs.
External Antenna connection
Available at reasonable cost outright or as a prepaid.
Preferably a cradle that allows snap in connection of power and antenna
Bluetooth
Good reception in remote areas.
Just the basics otherwise.
Bluetooth tethering would be a nice bonus.
The oldies like Samsung A411 are long gone.
Anyone tried the telstra T100 for example?

I have a motorola defy, which doesn't meet your needs, but I can tell you that it gets reception where my Samsung A411 doesn't. I bought my defy when it was labelled a Blue tick phone.

My Nokia 6720 is the best rural reception phone I've had so far, beats the wifes samsung A411 hands down. Has an Inductive antenna, no plugs or cables to handle.

The Nokia 6120 is still available for about $75.
Was $569 when I got mine
Has bluetooth and you can buy a cradle for it with power and an inductive aerial connection.
I have one in the cupboard actually.
Can also install Tom Tom on it and navigate using a bluetooth GPS like the Globalsat BT338..
Beats an Iphone hands down for remote reception.

I had a couple of 6120's. I would say they are ok but not great and the Force cradle/ inductive antenna was almost of no use on a 6db antenna ( 1/2 bar improvement at best) so Iwant to try a direct couple antenna and I am really looking for fringe reception.

Hi, Have to agree with snoopyone, I had a 6120 and it gets great coverage also used it for a modem with a data pack for the laptop,
Had it for 2 years ( still have it ) , now have a 6720 . same great reception plus a 5 meg camera.
No external antenna , never really needed one .

You might want reception further away than I did but I got a call 45 k north of
Carnarvon when coming down the highway with it..
Had 4 bars in the cradle with a 2195 aerial.
None at all when I took it out of the cradle

Just be careful if you are buying a Telstra (ZTE) phone and you own a Toyota with a factory bluetooth radio. They are not compatible.I have a T-108 and a T-3020 and neither will work in my 2010 Corolla and from what I have read, won't work in any Toyota with factory bluetooth.

G'day,
Being a farmer and owning property (just outside where 90%of the
population that Telstra
services live!) I've done ALOT of whinging to Telstra on this, we used to have the zte165 but now run the T90. You can run bluetooth with these and can plug in external aerials. People who tell you you don't need an external aerial with phone brand XX are not actually outside coverage areas. we run patch leads to aerials on all vehicles and get good coverage. (Usually 2to3 bars where most phones without aerials have nothing.) My vote is for the T90. A tough phone - good coverage, but basic. Poor camera, horrible for viewing internet, but rings when you need it to!
Cheers
Corrugate

I have one as
well....and if the reception goes, I plug in the patch lead to the 6.5 Db broomstick aerial and get approx 2 to 3 bars extra reception..
Big numbers for old blind people......bluetooth......but no fancy touchscreen etc....
A very under rated phone....

The Motorola Defy has better coverage than this phone too when I have tried them side by side, but haven't used external aerial.

I bought the ariel from dick smith and then there is a patch lead that connects the ariel to the phone from memory all up around $95-$110

My Husband dearly loves his A411, the only reason he deviated from it recently was due to getting a free HTC Desire for work use. I dare say he will still be keeping the trusty A411 for sentimental reasons once he cuts the account off in the next month or so.
We live rural with marginal reception, the Desire doesn't seem too bad in that department if you were toying with the idea of considering some of the newer smart phones. Not sure much would match up to the A411 when considering reception and battery usage!

Thanks, I have a Desire and a passive antenna and have found it is no where near as good as my old 6120. I was kind of hoping for one step up from that.

Thanks for your
feedback on the Desire, I might have considered getting it after my contract finishes up towards the end of this year.
I've got a Sony Ericson W508, not a bad phone but not as good as the A411 reception wise, it's not too bad actually but it is very slow to detect signal changes (like going from inside to outside to get better signal etc) and that can be rather annoying.
What I did notice is that telstra has different descriptions for their phones best usage areas and none seem to actually say "rural".

Well strike the Telstra T100 off the list.
I went to a Telstra
shop yesterday, and they had T100's.
The sales guy refused to sell it to me. He said it was the most unreliable phone he had seen. I explained that I just wanted it for an ocassional use remote phone and he would not budge.
He said it would be back being repaired 70% of the time. He said the T90 is the best they had, but I don't want to spend that much money.
