Hi Guys,

I am heading up to Lake Eyre in a few weeks for a very short trip, the main purpose being a scenic flight out of Marree.

Does anyone know of any moderate/challenging 4wd tracks around the Marree region that my friends and I could do on a short trip to Lake Eyre? We are looking for something to take up a morning or afternoon 2 - 4 hours max. I have a mate who says he isn't going home till he has given low range a bit of a run

The plan is:
Day 1: Drive Up to Marree from Adelaide
Day 2: Scenic Flight in the morning, drive out to Lake Eyre Nth and probably camp at Muloorina
Day 3: Drive up Ood Track to viewing point at the bottom of Lake Eyre Sth, start heading back in Adelaide direction.
Day 4: Drive back to Adelaide from wherever we end up.

We were planning on driving between Andamooka and Farina on the way back however after ringing the Flinders and outback visitors centre, Mulgaria Station and the Dukes Bottle House in Andamooka we don't think that is an option any more as we will run out of time. (see below for details of what I found out)

I know we could race back down to the Flinders but the main aim is to see Lake Eyre so I don't want to be rushing back South after being there for just a day.

So does anyone have any ideas?

Cheers

Alex

Mulgaria Track Enquiries

Outback Tourist Centre

The property has been bought by BHP and the track is no longer maintained.
Drive is considered Extreme (person I spoke to said extreme about 7-8 times) and should only be attempted by experienced drivers in convoy.

Gave me the numbers of the other two places to ring for myself.

Mulgaria Station

Just an answering machine message that states that the track is closed until further notice.

Margo from the Dukes Bottle House

Track is no longer being maintained.
It is no longer regularly travelled
In good conditions it used to take 4-5 hours, now we should allow much more time.
There are several serious washouts.
Last people she heard of going through a while ago made it but damaged their suspension in the process. Bent a stabiliser bar or something like that. (driving too fast?)

There is a track from Marree to the bottom of Lake Eyre (can't remember the name offhand) that could do, it was not passable when we were there but may be what you are looking for??

Yep, that's the PAR that goes through Muloorina Stn to Level Post Bay.

We will already be driving along there from Marree and hopefully camping at Muloorina for the night.

From what I hear it is pretty easy though (i.e. no need for low range)

Yep you are wright that is an easy drive, most points don't even need 4wd.there is good camping at Maloorina by the lake. there is a track from Farina that heads west, last time that i was out there it was good low range driving, may be worth a look??also good camping at Farina as well.
