Hi all, just purchased an 08 Patrol 3.oltr intercooled turbo diesel. I was hoping if someone could give me some advice whether or not to install a turbo timer, i believe they don't come out standard because you have to leave car only with handbrake applied.on the other hand if turbo does'nt cool down properly the oil will crystallize and potentionally destroy motor, what should i do?.

Matt the new turbos are water cooled and do not require the old run down of the oil lubed turbos.
However after a long run I still idle the car for a couple of minutes before shutdown. This is more a habit than necessary

I have both a turbo timer and an EGT
Vehicle normally runs at 325 deg and have seen advice that the turbo shouldnt be shut down until its below 200deg
My turbo timer is set for 90 secs which usually allows turbo to drop below that.
In saying that it is illegal in QLD anyway to leave a vehicle unattended with the
motor running thereby making the usage of a turbo timer illegal..
You would I hope also leave the vehicle in PARK wouldnt you.
I cant remove key unless
mine is.
AN EGT would be much more beneficial especially with that motor if you are towing any appreciable weight.

PS The oil has the potential to boil and dry up if stopped when too hot.
Result fried bearings.

In me old Cordia Turbo that had done 385'k I use to just coast along for the last mile or so to let the turbo spool down.
I also had a bypass switch so I could turn both the thermo fans on from inside the car for extra cooling befor shut down, handy in summer and filthy Hot day.
Also change the engine oil and filter every 5k will help heaps for a long turbo life.
Cheers.

In the Nissan Owners Manual it says to let engine idle for a while so Turbo can cool down.
They also state this is only required when vehicle has been driven at highway speed.
When driving at suburban speed it is not required.
I usually let our Nissan idle for a couple of minutes when towing the van ect.
Some say that they don't require the cool down procedure if they reduce their speed when they slow down from hwy speed to normal speed re 60kph.
Cheers

Also a consideration will be to talk to your insurance. It may be legal in some states, but I know some insurers won't insure your vehicle if it has a timer fitted. And besides, hundreds of bucks to save a minute or two after driving for hours isn't really what I would call an investment.

Hardly hundeds of bucks
Mine was $79 at Autobarn and in a Grenade could possibly save $10,000 rebuild
Insurance Co dont mind You can use them just have to sit there till it turns off which is a bit stupid I know but who does.
Had a cop parked next to me when I walked away once. He never said a word.
