Hi Deanna

I use Miltons tablets, baby bottle cleaner.

Normally use about half strength of the directions on the packet, leave in for a few days and then flush out the tank.

Thanks wbsl & Jack for that, I hadn't heard of that one before but stands to reason that it should work.

3rd for the Milton tablets. Just put them in and leave them for a few days. If you want you can go for a drive around the block to mix them up and also run the water mix through all of your pipes and pumps. I keep my water tank empty also if not being used for long periods.

Regards

If you want to try Bicarb, about 500grams dissolved in a bucket of water, syphon or tip it into tank, fill tank to top, leave for a day or two, drain and flush well.

Tastes can be caused by using ordinary garden hose to fill tank, always use food grade hose to fill tank.

If you had filled the tank from an unreliable water source then 1ml of bleach to every 10 liters of water will make it potable and that dose does not appear to affect the smell or taste.
I used that ratio on my boat on a 3 months Kimberley cruise where the tanks were frequently topped up from waterfalls.
So, after you had cleaned your tanks - you could also use a stronger dose of bleach for this, which must be flushed out completely - an occasional dose as above will prevent any further problems.
BTW, my water tanks are the rigid black poly caravan type.

Thanks for the reply V8 Troopie, we have a drinking water grade hose that we use to fill the van up, it's just been so long since it was cleaned and last time we took the van out I could taste the tainted water, Hubby couldn't so it isn't too bad but still needs cleaning.

Good place for info on cleaning water and water tanks is the B.E.S.T. Water Filters web site. They have a pdf file re 'The method we recommend to clean tanks with 'questionable' quality or bacterial content. Safe and non-offensive solution!"

I second using bleach to clean a tainted tank.

I don't believe the problem would be from filling with anything but "Food Grade" hose though.

I always fill my tanks at home with the garden hose as my Blue hose is not long enough and have never had a problem.

Saying that, I always, where possible use the blue hose when propped in a park and have the van connected to a tap via the hose.

I don't doubt the water could pick up a 'taste' when left sitting, under pressure in the hose perhaps in the sun too.

Cheers Neil
