Tanami - how far between diesel fuel stops?

We are going to travel from Alice up the Tanami on our way to Broome. I'm wondering now that Rabbit Flat is closed how many kilometres it will be between diesel fuel stops after Alice?

Hi Frances

The question where to buy fuel has been asked a couple of times recently. The longest stretch, if you go off the road to the communities, would be from Yuendumo which is fairly close to the road to Balgo which is 30 or so kilometres south of the road, so you can consider these and the other places mentioned to calculate your needs.

Travelling from the west in 2008, we purchased fuel in Halls Creek, intended to purchase just some at Rabbit Flat, but it was all locked up and nobody around. We purchased some at Yuendumo to be sure, but would have had adequate to get to Tilmouth Well, but we do have a large diesel tank.

Frances,

I'd recommend buying a copy of the Hema Great Desert Tracks - North Central map. It has all the communities that have fuel available marked, their hours of operation, phone numbers and has the distances between each stop marked on the map.

Also check out the trek notes on the EO site. The information is contained in them as well.

Cheers Mick

Thanks Mick O as you have also helped me heaps. We did the Tanami etc in around 1999 with that great expedition leader, Geoff Portman ( once a Aust Rally Champ) and a legend in the bush or desert. Thankfully, although their place and beautiful horses were all in the Victorian fires area, they were ok. Perhaps, being a bushman, the property was well prepared.

Also remember that some of the communities are closed weekends and so no fuel available.

Hi,

I was in the Tennant Creek visitor centre last week and there was a notice on the information board stating Rabbit Flat was permanently closed.

I understand the owners have left.

Maybe some one will buy it.

Cheers
