Personally, I've never needed a winch, but for those who might want one:

12000lb Winch

I haven't compared prices.

DYOR.

Very cheap winch. Havent heard of the brand before. I know some things are getting cheaper but this is almost too cheap!
Be interesting to see if anyone has one or seen one in action. You could buy 10 of these for the price of a 12,000lb warne.
cheers

Blimey Stephen, makes me almost want a winch even though I've never needed one either!

Then again, maybe just a cardboard image of one stuck on the bar would serve as well. LOL

I wonder if there is a market for fake plastic winches, snorkels, auto tune antennas, high lift jacks etc so you can look like a serious off roader but without the cost?

In the 80's in Sydney there was a mob who would mud spray your vehicle so it looked like you had been out playing in the fun stuff.

Pete, I've wondered about that Autotune on the back of your Jack. Didn't look quite kosher to me! LOL

You got me Al!

But the plastic accessories are so much lighter than the real thing - a great fuel saving.

The list goes on - empty plastic jerry cans and a vinyl inflatable fake spare tyre for the roof racks (which are also plastic). Dummy lightforce lights (big saving on wiring).

:o)

I think you may be on to something Pete! Interested in a partnership?
The inflatable fake spare tyre would really cut down my roof-rack load.
How about wrap-over fattie mud tyres?
Navy blue singlets with built-in shoulders & biceps?

I just had a closer look.

It's even got a cordless remote control. How cool is that?

And a "30 Day Warranty". Wow, that's just about enough time to go out and get bogged just to try it out.

Even if it only worked once it would be enough though. Because most people will tell you that they "carried one for years but only used it once"

But having spent years bagging people with winches I couldn't fit one now even if it was free! lol

I have never used a winch. I very rarely ever got bogged. Being bone lazy I used to walk anything that looked soft. It was easier to turn and go somewhere else than spend hours digging out.

When I worked for a now defunct mining company their policy was no winches as it would encourage staff to get further into trouble.

G'day Gone Bush,
A very cheap price.
I was testing out my winch the other day and it didn't work, so i got a quote for a new motor at $405 from ARB. The problem turned out to be the brushes hung up with a lot of rust, cleaned them (they were jammed solid in the guides) up and back in operation.
If you do have a winch don't forget to travel with people who get bogged a lot, or give it an occasional run.
It's like carrying an umbrella.

Cheers,
Bill

This would certainly make an excellent winch for someone who doesn't actually intend to ever use it. I can't quite grasp the concept where people save money on a recovery item that has the potential for very serious consequences should something fail. Not worth the risk.

Remote control is probably an essential safety item... does the term shrapnel come to mind?

Trying to open a can of worms ?? Its exactly the same [ except brand sticker] as the 12000lb winch I bought off an Ebay seller on the GoldCoast in 2000 , cost back then was roughly the same and has now been on 2 vehicles , the 80 series and our Rodeo , was used extensively in 02 while on the 80 series towing our c/t on the 6mth trip including the OTL when the 80 decided to become a 2x4 instead of a 4x4 , the winch has NEVER failed in 11 yrs to date ,

I think they all look the same, mate, but you don't know what's inside.

You're lucky, I think.

I have one from Aldi, 9500lbs, made in China. I bought it 3 years ago, $600 and haven't fitted it 'cos I need a bar and suspension and haven't got there yet. The winch itself APPEARS to be A1. The solenoid box is crap and I've heard bad reports about the winch. But perhaps the reporters (who have something to sell, or who have spent a lot more money) have had a self-interest??

I'm now getting the bar and suspension and have been talked out of using that winch in favour of another Chinese made (at considerable extra cost, but still half the price of a Warn) from a reputable 4WD shop. It will be supported with field warranty and service, rather than store warranty from a grocery shop.

Cheers

Frank
