I use a large piece of canvas tarp. Put it on the rack first and hang it over the windscreen. Load rack then fold back over load, tuck the sides under, then weave a strap over the lot and tighten down.

Ends up water proof and if loaded with the higher part to the back it ends up wedge shapped.

On the troopies I made a thin aluminium deflector that hung off the front of the roof rack and kept the same angle as the roof in front of the rack. The rack started above the B pillars where the roof flattened out.
Then we just used a canvas rack bag to put everything in, worked well.
fitting the wind deflector to the front made a huge difference to the noise so I assumed it made a difference to wind resistance as well.
Keeping the taller items to the rear also helped the slipstreaming.

Michael, never seen that before. I'm well sick of having my fuel economy plummet every time I load up the roof rack. Where do you get one of these whizzbang deflectors?

Tommo!! I made the bars myself and added the deflector. It is just a piece of 6mm Polycarbonate, bolted at the bottom, works well! Michael
