Hiya all
Would anyone have a lead (or suggestion) on a portable - self contained, I assume battery operated 'rattle gun'. I think the correct term is impact wrench??
Just that I'm getting a bit old and sore to be weilding a wheel brace!!
Thanks

Here's one that I have:

Ryobi Impact Wrench

There's a whole lot of other tools that use the same batteries too.

I'm glad I ain't too scared to be lazy

Struth GB, 265Nm of torque. You'd want to be watching the wheel studs with it on it's strongest settings.

A Shentai Electric from ARB ($90) does the job

WARNING only do the wheel nuts up with two cracks at them.

To explain spin it up, Bang Spin it up, Bang

As most van wheel nuts are about 125 Nm it will break the studs if you whack it too hard as they give 279Nm

Also good the other day when I had to remove Bullbar

Undid and did up the nuts in no time with no effort.

Yep, I use a torqstik in conjunction with my 18v Makita impact wrench. I used to have a Shentai (same as KC Easy wrench) and they are great too; just that you have to muck around with a 12v cable, so for me the cordless Makita is the way to go.

I have a number of other tools that are also Makita 18v and have 5 x 3amp batteries, so there's always a fresh battery available.

TIP: these battery operated tools are MUCH cheaper if you buy them from the USA by mail order or off US ebay.

I have a Panasonic unit that also has a drill chuck, and a driver chuck as well as the 1/2 " drive for sockets. Used it as a diesel fitter in the mines with no problems, comes in very handy.

This is the style of unit I would get, being a drill as well can come in handy and for home use?? They are smaller and lighter than the dedicated impact wrenches like the KCI .

Panasonic are pretty pricey but exellent quality, you might find a cheaper alternative of the same setup

I've got one of these Dewalt Impact driver
It runs up to 150nm, has hex quarter drive, you can get drill bits and socket drivers to suit, very small and compact.
For the hard to undo stuff I've got one of these Dewalt 1/2" impact
with over 400nm it works well, the same battery for both tools and the recipro saw with 12" blade for cutting firewood.

If you are looking for a replacement of the wheel brace why not try the KCI Easy Impact Wrench? KCI Easy Wrench

If you subscribe to a certain 4WD magazine it is free.

Is the KCI easy wrench adjustable?

I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Cheers Dodg.

Dodger, they have only one force in reverse and forward.
The sockets as supplied are rubbish so if you get one get a good quality impact socket the size of your wheel nuts and you will not regret it.

Cheers, Bruce.

The sons and us all have one of these (KCI Easy Impact Wrench). The standard cables that come with it enables it to reach all four wheels, and the spare, on the Toyota. You could get an extension cable if needed from any car 12V accessories place.

Recommended.

I bought an impact wrench off evil bay 4 yrs ago & still works fine I think I paid about $38 for it. Brand new & obviously chinese made. I use a a bar on wheel brace to do the last minor tighten on the wheel nuts.

Bought a similar one at Repco for the same price, put an Anderson plug on it and made up an extension lead.

I stripped it down and found it was well made, I just added some grease to the gears. It is identical to the KC impact driver in looks anyway.

Tha Snap on is quite good, I use the Dewalt 1/2" drive unit and very happy with it. I got the Dewalt because it uses the same bateries as my drills, Hitachi and Ryobi both do them. For peace of mind get torque bars or tighten with a brace. I dont myself, but every now and then I will check tightness with a brace.
After getting one you will probably ask yourself why you didnt get one sooner.

this is the one I use, this is an ebay item

That certain 4WD magazine is now offering a KCI air compressor free with a subscription. Anyone got one and would care to comment? Seems it might well be adequate for my not-very-offroad needs. They retail for about $189.
