On a trip like that I would book early. It's a pain if all seats were full because a train just unloaded a few hundred people thinking the same. Its a long way back if you do not get a ride.
We did it and got the last seats when we booked the day before.
I am guessing that you are talking about flying from Alice as we did.
If doing it from
the rock then I would look for a helicopter rather than a plane. The view out those big windows is so much better. We just did one over Lake Eyre in a helicopter and take my word for it, you will not be disappointed. The smaller the helicopter the better also.

Gooday,
Suggest you
check on the wording "FLY OVER
THE ROCK & THE OLGAS", paid for my Brother to do it in a helicopter a few years ago and found they were "NOT" allowed to fly "OVER" either, as it was culturally not allowable, they flew along one side and back again.
May have changed but I doubt it, just want you to be aware.
Cheers,
Boroma604.

Well you cant see
the rock if you fly over it. I've done the flight and you get a better view flying next to it, and yes book early its very popular.

Hi Mark,
We were out there last July, and did a 30 min helicopter flight taking in Uluru and The Olga's. Cost (IIRC) $250 each.
Worth it? Absolutely!!!
We took the flight from Ayers
Rock Airport with Ayers
Rock Helicopters. Booked them via a brochure from the reception at
Yulara camp ground. Pilot was a Swedish fellow named Kevin and he gave a great narrative of the area as we flew.
We didn't fly over
the rock, or the Olga's, but I think that flying alongside it was a better experience anyway. As magnificent as Uluru looks standing there beside it, it looks just as awesome from the air.
On another note, are you visiting
Kings Canyon? If you do, I can highly recommend the
rim walk, it's a fantastic journey! Also I can recommend the
Kings Creek Station, 35k's east of
Kings Canyon. A family owned business that gives a great insight into the daily workings of a stock
camp, and also insight into what is happening in local communities out there.
Hope this helps, and have a great trip Mark, it's a great part of the country!
Cheers
Brian

If you can afford it its worth taking the longer flight that runs over
Lake Amadeus to the East as
well. More spekky than Lake Eyre in my view.
