Need help with hard wiring a battery into our caravan

Hi everyone,

Can anyone tell me if the battery has to be earthed to the van? or do you just wire it positive to positive and negitive to negitive on the exisisting van wiring any diagrams would be greatly appreciated. We have got the car all good to go thanks to Derek at Sidewinder so we just want to hard wire in this battery now.

We would really love to hear from anyone who can offer any help.

Thanks Andrea

Hi Andrea

It is best to earth the battery to the van yes.

It is also a good idea to run earths for the accessories back to the battery.

If you have a shunt in the system for solar or battery monitoring make sure to read the instructions on placement of the shunt.

This a query rather than a statement and Derek or someone may confirm it for myself (and others).

I believe running twin (Battery and Earth) to all stuff in a Caravan / Camper Trailer / whatever (so that all earths come back to the battery point) is to avoid electrolysis due to different metals used in the chassis of them.

However in a vehicle it is OK to earth stuff at various earth points on the chassis because they are all the same material (under normal circumstances).

Hi Ken

I use earth returns because of rust, paint, wood and other insulating materials.

I would not worry about electrolytic or galvanic corrosion of metals on a caravan, boats are more prone to this problem.

Here is a link for you: EL-Corrosion

On vehicles I find chassis earths very good and am happy to use a good clean chassis earth. Others swear by a earth return on vehicles but it is almost impossible to run earth returns for every accessory on a vehicle, we tend to create a earth stud in the common areas and earth accessories back to that point. (See below)

I just finished( bout 2 hrs ago) semi rewiring 12 system in my poptop, so that i had a fuse block both for isolation purposes and for protection. With the earth return side i wired everything possible back to a common earth point to which the earth return of battery was connected. Only problem i came across was, that i found all my 12 v LED's still worked even with all the fuses out(incl the battery). So now i have to investigate how previous owner attache the said battery leads hahaha. Each of my visible connections was done one at a time to avoid any problems. Just letting you know ANDREA11 so that you make sure you dont get caught the same way.
