We are set up for both Caravan and tent holidays. Having just spent 3 months in the tent in Tassie were hoping for the luxury of the caravan for the next trip. We plan Hawker to Birdsville, up to Burketown, across to Normanton, down to Longreach and home via the Strezleki. With careful travel will the caravan make it? It has raisedsuspension, is an 18' Jayco Sterling Poptop.

we've just come off the Oodnadatta which is a pretty decent track and our electric brake cables were shredded through stone damage. Had to get home with no van brakes as it was a public holiday. 18'6" Jayco Discovery Outback "dirt roader" similar to yours. We averaged about 80 kph and when we stopped at Lyndhurst for fuel, a bloke towing a Jayco "Outback" camper pointed it out to me as he had been driving behind us and saw the cables trailing on the ground. He said his had done exactly the same. Everything else was alright apart from a heap (and I mean a heap) of dust under the bed and sofa cupboards. I suppose if you have the time to go a fair bit slower than we did you may not have the brake problem and less dust. It is a fairly easy and inexpensive fix, I suppose.

I have a 17.55.3 outback, have done the GRR, Oodnatta Track, Birdsville track etc. Main thing is to protect u/side, hoses wires etc from stones, I use additional flaps on tug and large flap at front of van. You need to seal any possible holes and vents including fridge and door vents. You will get some stone damge, hope this helps with your decision.

Take the tent Maxine

With the money you save on fuel and damage you can stay in the odd on-site van instead.

I love our caravan and do prefer the caravan to the tent but, the trip you are taking I would use the tent, less worry and hassle, and as Robin said the money you save can be spent on the occasional site van or motel.

Have a great trip, sounds great.
