Road Advice - Savannah Way

Is there any up to date or recent advice regarding travelling the Savannah Way from Mataranka to Cairns?

I understand there is a road closure on the Roper Highway. Is this still correct? I am using the following URL for advice:

We have a dedicated offroad van....

Hi Chris,

This is taken from Lorella Springs Newsletter June 2011 they send me.

The Nathan River road has had the Roads People working on it, and when we were on it we never needed to get out of 2 wheel drive. Lots of caravans are coming through from Roper Bar, Borroloola, and Cape Crawford.

Rememeber to always take it easy and it is recommended to give us a call to get the latest info just before you come, and so we can look out for you..

I am following it closely as we leave to go up to KFC and across the Savannah Way
to WA next week.

Cheers,
John

Thanks John.
I take it that I can contact Lorella Springs directly for info (as in the message you have quoted from their Newsletter)?

But if you are going to be travelling that way yourself, it would be great if you could post here any advice/info you get.

Hi,
We are currently in Borroloola.
We have been told that the Calvert River crossing is all but Impassable due to boulders on the crossing. The river is only knee deep at the crossing but the boulders are blocking it. We were told of this on Monday by a couple who had been held up at Hells Gate before taking the Calvert Hill Rd detour to Borroloola.
Hope this helps
regards
Guy

Yes we have, we had a Toyota coaster that came from Borroloola and the advice from "Cape Crawford" was NOT to go the calvert way so they went down to the Calvert Hills road and back up to the Savannah Way and by there map it was only a short drive down to the calvert crossing so they went and had a look, they walked it and said they would have taken the coaster over without a problem, that was 2 days ago so by that i would say it is fine, a lot of campers and vans are passing now but i have been a bit busy to have a yarn with them all........
Cheers guys

We have just arrived in Doomadgee (Gulf Country of QLD) and pulled up outside the Roadhouse. Surprisingly there is mobile phone and internet reception! Last night we camped beside a billabong, with no one and nothing else around except birds.

The trip has been lovely and we have seen some nice spots - as well as a LOT of bulldist and some corrugations. Many, many creek crossings. The creeks are of course a bonus, as most of them are flowing and clear water and have tracks leading down the side where one can camp.

The roads are in great condition and no creek crossing has been a concern. The Robinson was the deepest and it was not too bad.

We are just checking emails and waiting for Joe and Mel to get out of bed so we can say hello!
