hi, we are travelling from SA and going to look around the Gippsland area, there will be hubby and myself in a poptop (on road type) and a patrol, we like fishing and just looking at new or interesting
places, hubby is not able to walk too far or strenuous.
so i'm looking for
places others have been to and can recommend, and
places to stay whether in a caravan park or free/cheap campsites or
places to avoid.
we are travelling in October this year, we have got 6 weeks to do the trip.
thanks for any information from chris

You could try Bemm River.
It's a great spot, nice calm estuary for fishing.

Cape Conran, below Orbost is a nice bush
camping area with beach or
rock fishing close by.
South of Sale there is Seasprey a nice area in good weather.
Phillip Island is worth a look as with a lot of
places along the south coast around
Foster.

G'day Chris,
Croajingolong National Park.
Thurra river
campground is my pick for great camping & if you can do it the walk to the
point Hicks lighthouse is great. Not too hard as it follows a road that is open to walkers.
Cheers
Stu

I'd recommend this NP also - except we tend to go to Wingan Inlet.
Visiting this neck of the woods in October (before the Christmas rush) would be magic!

I feel that the camping sites are a bit more private at Thurra but since Thurra & Wingan
camp areas are so different why not visit both!

Gday...
Thurra and Wingan Inlet I think need pre-booking through the Nat Parks.
Would probably need to book early to make sure. Wingan has limited sites although Thurra has lots. They conduct a ballot for Xmas and
Easter etc very early.
October should not be too busy, but if near school holidays will be busy.
I agree great spots ... although I prefer Wingan Inlet.
Another good place to get a bit further away from it all is McKillops
Bridge north of
Buchan. Dirt road off main road north of of
Buchan but it is in very good condition and on-road van and 2WD vehicles have no difficulty.
Cheers

Hi GoneBush,
Just a short note re the road from
Buchan to McKillops
Bridge. This road , although usually in good condition is very narrow and unsuitable for towing a caravan where you drop down to the
Snowy River. It is a great place to
camp and can be accessed much more safely from Orbost via Tubbut. I hope you have a great trip.
Cheers
Neil (Orbost)

And you just couldn't go to that end of Gippsland and not visit
Mallacoota Inlet. It will be quiet at that time of the year with a large caravan park with sweeping
views of the lake.

Hi gone bush, I would recomend a tour along the Princess Hwy through Sale Bairnsdale etc to
Lakes Entrance, nice caravan park at Lake Tyrers beach on to
Buchan (good
camp ground at caves),
Omeo through Swifts creek, over Hotham, great scenery and down to
Bright down to the King Valley, food & wine(good free camps at Edi), visit Lake William Hovell,
Lake Cobbler.
You can explore around these areas and into the high country without the van.
It is all up to what you prefer.
Hope this helps.
Mark

My apologies for seeming to be pedantic, but I live in Gippsland & I hate the Prince's Highway being called the Princess Highway. The error has now even crept into local Rees & TV advertising.
Another place often missed is
Toorongo Falls, near Noojee, even though it is easy access.

Also look at Wilsons Promintory. We went there 3 years ago during Christmas, and it was just a magic place. Just done a day trip (went there twice), but would have loved to stay there. I understand you need to book
well in advance in peak periods.
