Canning stock route. How long to travel from Billiluna to Gary junction ?

Hi to everyone, I'm researching a possible trip. I have a well set up 4.5 petrol cruiser. I'm an experienced camper/traveller... How many days to drive from Alice springs to Billiluna ?..... Then Billiluna to Gary junction, along the Gary highway, joining the Tanami road back to Alice springs.? I'd be travelling from victoria,.. I would have no more than 3 weeks to complete the trip... Any suggetions on a different route ? Is 3 weeks a reasonable time frame to complete such a trip ? I have the latest Hema desert map book.. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Hi Bob, It took us 7 days in 09 to cover that distance. Its not a track for hurrying as there are some fair sized dunes and corrugations.

Cheers,

Bob, you could drive it in half that or less, really depends if you want to stop and have a look along the way or not.

The Gary Highway heads south from Gary Junction, I suspect you mean Gary Junction Road, I've traveled most of that track to Alice in bits and pieces, It's a very good track.

I haven't driven the Tanami in 16 years but it was a pretty good track back then.

Cheers
Alan

Bob

We travelled down the top 1/2 of the CSR in 09, and came out the Gary Junction Rd. to Alice in 2 weeks, and did it easy.

Not sure about the Tanami, but 2-3 days should be plenty.

From Vic you are gunna be doing some long days driving on the balck stuff, so I would allow 4 weeks ,,, if possible, and that way you are not under any pressure to make kms a day, because it is that pressure, that will cause you to make a mistake.

Cheers
Bucky

Hi Bucky, I'll be travelling solo, from past experience it means less stops and on the blacktop set the cruise control to just under 100kph and go with the flow of traffic, not racing. I'll leave home on day one at 6am and drive until 930pm,roadside camp in the swag, wake up at 6am and make the drive to alice springs, then take it easy. From Alice springs to Billiluna in 2 days, Billiluna to gary junction in 3 days I'm guessing ? Gary junction to Alice springs in 3 days. Stay in a cabin at Alice springs for a day then a slow drive home staying in motels along the way badk to melb.? Do you think thats possible ???

Bob
Good one.
Just do the tyre pressure thing, and waddle along, in the Canning..

that is a lot easier on your vehicle too

Cheers
And have a safe trip.

Bob

A bit more ..I had a re-think.. for actual dates/times (scarey stuff)

I went thru my foto album, on this computer, and siprise suprise, in details of foto's there is times and dates.

Left Stretch Lagoon ( Billiluna) approx 6:30am 14/9/2009
Arrived at Well 33, approx 12:30 (noon) 17/9/2009

Left Well 33 Approx 13:30 17/9/2009
Arrived Alice Springs Approx 12:00 (noon) 19/9/2009

And in Mid September that year, it was fairly hot too

Trip down included, the Breaden Hills, and a walk over to Godfrey's tank.
Kunawarritji, for Diesal and Ice creams...
Went to Kiwirrkurra, and had a look at Len Beadell's truck, went into the shop, and meet a couple of locals.
Into Kintore, more fuel and Ice creams, ect.

We never once hurried, in the Canning, averaged between 15-30 km/hr, and probably sat on 75-80 km/hr on the Gary Junction Rd..
We stopped regularly for Cuppa's, and foto shoots.
We did not go into a couple of wells

Hope this helps
Bucky

Hi Bob
This might help, on my tagalong tours I have covered all of the areas you mention, our travel times in a group and taking it fairly easy are as follows
Tanami track 2 days Alice to Billiluna (provided not wet)
CSR - Billiluna to Well 33 = 5 days, this is easy going and allows time to visit each well and Godfrey tank at Breadon Hills starts off good road with sand dunes from well 50 down and bad corrugations between well 35 and well 33.
Well 33 to Alice via Gary Junction Road 3 days of driving in a convoy with a lot of scenic stops, road was easy going when I did it in 2006, but again subject to wet weather closures and degradation.
Hope this helps

Hi Vic, Thanks for your detailed reply. With each reply I recieve I'm getting my thoughts around how possible the trip is in my time frame. And wether I think it's worth it, I don't want to drive all that way without some sightseeing... Thanks Vic.
