Looking for info on road from Hyden to Southern Cross. I have an old camper van which is suspect to unsealed roads.

Hi Chris

We have been on both the Emu Fence Road; Marvel Loch to Hyden, and the Marvel Loch-Forrestania Road; travelling from Yellowdine to the Hyden-Norseman Road east of Hyden. The latter can be reach from Southern Cross via Marvel Loch.

We had our old camper when we went via Emu Fence Road and at the time it was freshly graded and a good wide road servicing farms. Condition may well depend on when it was last graded.

We were not towing when we went on the Forrestania Road and found this and all the roads around Marvel Loch to be very well maintained by the mining companies for their road trains.

They are however dirt roads. I think the only way to stay on bitumen would be to go the Merredin and then south.

I have reported travelling north to south, whereas you will be travelling in the opposite direction - hence 'south from Merredin' does not make sense.Hyden - Narembeen - Merredin for you direction of travel.

Hi

We also did the Emu Fence Road from Hyden last September.

Good gravel road.

Camped at Cockatoo Tank, not much there but plenty of wood for fire.

Did a bit of a detour to Frog Rock but no camping allowed there.

I did the Emu Fence Rd, Marvel Lock Rd... etc when travelling from Yellowdine to Hyden last weekend (amongst a few other side trips). The road was exceptionaly smooth and would present no problems at all. in fact I was suprised just how well the road was maintained.

Just need to give these things a wide berth!

Cheers

Did most of that road a month ago (Emu proof fence) in a Ford sedan.
The road surface was tremendous, most of those eastern wheat belt roads are as it never rains. No pot holes, wash outs, jagged road base or corrugations.
My colleague who was driving was doing well over 100km/hr, too fast for my liking though.

Only thing to watch are intersections as the ironstone surface is not brilliant for braking (ball bearings on concrete), you tend to skid for a distance.

Like others have said, the Emu Fence Rd is in good condition.
Went through there about 3 weeks ago and it had been raining not long before we travelled along there and the road was still good to travel on.
