Newbie here planning to spend 2-3nights at a resort with the wifey, mainly to catch some snow and beginner's skiing.
Unfortunately next week is the only time this winter that we could conceivably take 3 days off work.
So, between Buller, Hotham and Falls; which would offer the best snow fall this early? I was looking at the forecast
http://www.bom.gov.au/vic/forecasts/alpine.shtml and it appears that mid week would be sunny :(
Also heard that Buller could get fairly crowded, although I don't think that would be a problem at this time and during the weekdays?
Any recommendation or advice would be greatly appreciated. We're planning to catch a train/coach, and staying on the mountain for some sights and eating out. Cheers

While there maybe a 30cm natural cover at the moment across the main Vic resorts, I'd suggest that will be lucky to last much past the weekend. However with below zero temps forecast all week what you should be looking at is which mountain has the best snow making facilities which I'd suggest Mt Buller has. With four beginer runs available currently 50cm deep it would be a good option. Lift tickets may still be 1/2 price next week too.

Tray,
I know a bit about this topic. In your position you need good snow as
well as other
services, easy access to runs, variation in runs, and such.
I think
Falls Creek will be your best bet.

I would suggest Buller has the most lifts open and will access more (and what I remeber as better) runs. Just my opinion based on the report.
see this snow report page

Bone up on the snow reports
http://ski.com.au/snowreport.html
but really only a few runs are going to be open at any resort and mostly with man-made snow in all probability.
As a beginner I'd rule Hotham out because of its low percentage of green runs (though the
views from the Heights and Davenport, where the accomm. is can be fab.
If you're coming from Melb., I'd pick Buller cos it closer and the Burke St. run allows for plenty of beginner wobbling about.
