Ithink you normally can recieve further than you can transmit and 40km for uhf is above average.

40km is distance, 40 kph is speed so the OP was talking about distance.

does that happen on all channels? Sounds like you may be using a channel between 31 and 39. Those are repeater channels only.
Generally a 5W radio is only good upto 10-15km.

G'Day Mick,
Sounds like you might have an intermittent bad connection at the antenna. As you speed up & the antenna bends a little it's probably either breaking the connection or shorting it. I would get it checked & not transmit untill you do, as this may damage the output stage of your transmitter. You will still be able to hear close signals with this problem.

Mick,
I had the same thought. Can you borrow a magnetic based antenna and substitute for yours?

Spot on Mick.
If he was in
Canberra I have a couple of magnetic bases that we could try. I am not a member so I cannot see his profile.

Mate I have used these on my machines and 4x4 for years and have had trouble also as in yesterday. After checking out aerial for cracks or breaks I ended up loosening the base and then giving it a bit of a grounding on the base to re-earth it and she's right again. This is a common problem with two ways.

Hi Mick 1234,
I would
check the connection of the aerial on the back of the UHF and make sure that this is tight.

Thanks to all for your replies. I am at a van park in
Alice springs and someone said that they haven't cut down the antenna when I remove the cap off the top it hasn't been cut so I might wait till tomorrow and take it to get it checked.

Or your antenna is a high gain wire type that bends at speed. That cuases issues at speed.

Especially if used with an "elevated feed" antenna base...
They get out of phase, or something like that, so I'm told....

It does not matter much whether they are of the elevated feed type or not. When a very high gain type leans back they tend to transmit up into the sky in front of you and into the ground behind you. You can also get into that sort of trouble when negotiating creek crossings with any high gain antenna.
