Hi All,

Before heading off on our 12 month trip, I fitted new rubber to our Patrol, expecting them to last the full 12 months, I went into my local Beaurepairs dealer in Narre Warren (vic) and enquired about some Wrangler a/t's, Silent Armour,
I specificaly remember asking about the different quality of the tyres, and that I had herd that there were some cheaper Indonesian tyers available, or some more expensive US made tyers available, as I was only interested in getting the "better" tyer.

He assured me that they were all made in Indonesia these days, but not to worry as they were all good quality!

So, to cut a long story short, 6 months later (20,000km approx) I'm now in Broome, I have been a bit anal with tyre pressures and rotations etc (including spares) and they have warn terribly, there is no way I will get another 20,000km out of them. I am towing and yes reasonably heavy

Speaking to a fella in the site next to ours, who has some obviously new looking Wrangler all terrains, I was having a whinge about mine, and he says, did you get the "Pro Grade ones, made in the USA ?" because the Indonesian ones are ordinary!!! Apon closer inspection his are stamped "Pro Grade" and distinctly have Made in USA on them, he says he has allways used them and expects 90,000 to 100,000 km out of them

So I guess my question is, do any of you have knowledge of the different types of Wranglers available, and do you think I should be able to get some sort of compensation or maybe a reduction in the price of some new Pro Grade ones?

From here our trip will only get tougher on the tyres as we are about to do the Kimberly (Gibb River rd etc) accross the top and Cape York, before heading South again, not to be attempted on dodgy tyres I'm thinking???

Cheers.....Browny

Hi there Browny, did you pay for quality originally or save a few bucks to believe what you were being told ?? Firm believer in you get what you pay for !Not that this helps you now but cheaper out of Indonesia and Korea with way less quality is to be expected.
Wish I was where you are,
Enjoy your adventure - good luck with remaining K's

Rip64,

Mate I paid what I was quoted! If I was given a choice I would of got the better tyre! But as I pointed out I was only offerd the Indonesian tyre!

Are you insinuating I ignored the option of a better tyre, and went with a cheaper option and am now whinging about it? I can't remeber the exact price, but they were comparible with other brands BFG's etc!

Browny I too have been conned with tyres( Coopers unroadworthy after 35000 km) not having a go at you but these blokes are in the business to sell to blokes like you and me and will say untruths at times - I feel your pain - and I still wish I was where you are now - Torquay (Vic) is 8deg's and rain at the moment.
Enjoy your adventure and Safe travels

Hi Browny,

We had a set of the USA Wranglers put on our Landcruiser about 18 mths ago. I did a lot of research and can say only a couple of tyre dealers advised me there was two types of qualities in this brand. I was unsure about trying them but our dealer advised us if we had a problem they would fix it. Well I can say after 4000klms we were most unhappy with the tyre and as to their word they took them back and changed them to Yokohama and we have been so happy with them and get far more klms then they say we should.

I am not sure if certain model cars like particular tyres but our girl likes the yokies.

We wish you the best of luck with your efforts is getting compensation. From our experience with these tyres we would not have them fitted ever again.

CJ,

Interesting you wern't happy after only 4000km, our Wranglers have performed ok, but the wear rate is unexceptable imo

Browny,
The question of tyres usually causes strong opinions to be aired but I think everyone will agree you get what you pay for if you are careful. For my 4wds I have always used US made tyres and only had one disappointment. My last 2 sets of tyres have been BFG AT & MT and have been excellent. Whatever brand you choose just make sure you get genuine first quality - there are some importers bringing in factory seconds apparently, and make sure they are LT with the appropriate load rating for your laden vehicle. Many tyres fail because they are running at their limits.
cheers

Alistair,

I'm hearing you Al in regards to the age old tyre debate, but I'm not really asking for a tyre/brand comparison, so hopefully the thread doesn't become that, just about the Wranglers and the US v Indonesia brands, and maybe if anyone else has fallen for the cheaper tyre, not realising there is an alternative?

If no luck with compensation, I'll probably go with the BFG's from another outlet

I am looking to put a set of LT construction tyres on a VW T5 campervan with 17' wheels - only make available that ticks all the boxes is a GoodYear cargo vector. When I asked the local tyre dealer what he thought of them he said to keep away from Goodyears made in Indonesia but OK from US. The Goodyears I am interested in are made in Germany so hope they will reflect German quality control.

Here is the complaints policy.

Why not give them a call but you must follow up with a written complaint as you can be certain they won't record your verbal seriously.

Purchased a set of these tyres two years ago, and far from happy with how quickly they have worn. Won't be buying them again.

And yes mine are made in Indonesia!

Annoying thing is that at the time searched for information and found nothing mentioning about being made in USA or Indonesia.

It's wrong that a company can sell an inferior product along side it's quality product without any disclosure!

One thing I know is regardless of where their tyres are produced....wont be buying this brand ever again!

Hi Mate

i have the Pro Grade silent armours on a V8 TD Landcruiser ute fitted with an Obieco service body. It has done 65000km mainly off road (commercial use) and they are just about shagged now. They have been fantastic with not one puncture. Our other vehicle running coopers has suffered a number of side wall failures over the same terrain.
