Hi there
tried to get to Mt Walker (outside Lithgow) yesterday and had to cross this mud puddle. Got the shock of a lifetime as mud came over the bonnet half way through.

All good so far, however as we were not able to climb up the mountain, we had no choice but go back the same way, hence mud puddle again!!

.....If I only had placed a tarp around the front it would not have damaged the alternator, as it stopped charging the moment I came out of the puddle.

Back to Sydney on a tow truck. (great service by NRMA w/ the premium cover)

Hi there JS I had the same thing happen to me when we did a track up at Morriset behind the old nursing home. Went through come out the other side no problems turned the car off for lunch then when restarted it the light was on, we flicked over to LPG and got all the way home to Penrith and I checked the voltage and was still on 11.6 so wasnt to bad but I turned everything off no opening electric windows, no radio just what I needed to keep car going. Think I need to get the wife singing lessons. I noticed you have LPG did you give it a go or did you need head lights ?? Also when I got home I just kept the motor running got the hose out and wedged it next to radiator and turned it on flat out at the alternator and let car run for at least 1/2 an hour, the light kept flickering on and off for a while and eventually stayed off and never had another issue with the alternator. I thought well I have nothing to lose the thing I thought was stuffed anyway so what the heck. I added some extra rubber under the wheel arch to try and stop the mud etc getting thrown directly into alternator, helped a bit. I was just watching the clips on youtube form your day out yesterday, Im hanging to get the 120 ready for some off road stuff but not all there yet. Looks like you all had a great day must have been bloody freezing up there looking at the condensation coming out for all your exhaust pipes lol. Regards Steve

we did pour some warm water over the alternator and the Battery light on the dash did go off for a while, but came back on again.
I might give it another try.
It was very muddy all around; not too cold though.

I was at Thompsons creek dam behind Mt Lambie yesterday Steve and it was COLD. I Had on neoprene waders and a down jacket and a beanie under my akubra and waas just comfy. Took a sip out of the bottle of coke that was in the back of my vest and it was almost to cold to drink. You would not want to be stuck in that kind of weather. Lithgow was 5c so Mt Lambie would have been 2c.

As has been said a good dunking with fresh water will eventually wash the mud out of the alternator brushes and it should start working again.

just been told by the auto electrician that the coil in the alternator is burned; no 2nd hands around. Brand new coming from Melbourne tomorrow....around $ 500.00

How can I make it up to the missus...???
