Broken Hill to Uluru

My family are going to be driving, with a Landcruiser and an off road camper trailer, from Broken Hill to Alice Springs in the next couple of weeks. Which route out of via Port Augusta or via Camerons corner would you suggest taking? We would like to stop at Lake Eyre and Uluru on the way, if this makes a difference to your suggestion?

Cheers,

Jason.

Go the Corner, for sure, nick across to Innamincka and then down the Strzelecki Track. Beautiful country all the way and so green at the moment thanks to all the water it's had. You might not get another chance to see it like that for a while.
The only advantage I can see with Pt Augusta is being able to wander into the Flinders ranges on the way up to Lake Eyre through Lyndhurst, but you can detour off the Strzelecki at Mt Hopeless and go through Arkaroola to Leigh Creek and still get your Flinders fix.
It's a definite Cameron Corner vote for me.

Thanks for your info Tommo, much appreciated. The driver has no experience with 4wd driving or towing really, you hear lots of stories about the Strezlecki track, is it a difficult drive?

Cheers,

Jason.

It's basically an unsealed highway mate. It is the main transport route for vehicles servicing the oil and gas fields up in the corner country, so it is kept in schmick condition. There are some creek crossings in the lower half, but they're not too serious and they'll be good experience for ya. Just be sure to check the depth and walk them if necessary, but generally you'll find if any of the crossings are dangerously deep the road will be closed. You've got the 4wd machinery, might as well use it!
It really is an easy drive, people do it in 2wds all the time. The only reason you need the 4wd is for clearance through the creek crossings when they get up a bit.

Jason

Like Tommo has said, it is a top road and the only time you will need 4X4 is when it is wet, in which case you head for high country and wait for the road to dry out.

Another very important note for your friend is to make sure he covers his back window, or else it could be an expensive trip from a rouge stone from his trailer breaking the rear window.

My only caution on choosing to go via Camerons is time.

I have done the trip both ways you can get from BH to Alice in about 3 days if you need to via PA but it will take a fair bit longer on the dirt.

Having said that unless I had a compelling reason to save the time I would go via the Corner.

Thanks Duncs, I was thinking it would take longer as it's adding about 250km plus the dirt factor, but we have 6 months to go around the country so a few extra days won't matter and by the sounds of it it's worth the time.

Cheers,

Jason.
