Still looking to put together a user friendly system. One idea is a ipad 2 with blue tooth GPS mouth loaded with ozexplore and igo or similar applications. Want something easy to use and accurate. Ipad seems to be a great bit of kit , what do the experienced travellers out there think. Not impressed with Hemma , my little tom tom kept going out wesyt long after the hemma was lost.
Thanks to all

We have a 2 din GPS unit in the dash. Cannot be stolen nor left at
home. Its a VMS unit we purchased a few years back. Hasn't missed a beat. It has all the stuff you would need. Its got OziexplorerCE (purchased separately), Igo, MemoryMap, radio, CD/DVD, USB, blue tooth. Aux video, Reversing camera, plus more that we never use. But it is expensive. You can do the same through many outlets, one being GPSOz.
A VMS unit at GPSOz
If you absolutely need to carry it around the this is NOT for you. I cannot help with ipads etc. Haven't got one don't want one.

You have answered a lot of my concerns. I just read the latest VMS catalogue and was impressed with the indash unit for the 200 series . No idea what they cost but was very interested. As you mention where ever you go its with you in the car.
Thanks so much.

Hi SKL,
Depending on bank balance, the Magellan Explorist XL gps unit has all Australian State and Territory maps pre-loaded. It is a carry around unit, slightly bigger than a mobile phone from about 10 years back.
The maps have elevation contours, all roads and a huge number of tracks. You can find any big city street address down to the location of country grain
bins.
From personal experience I have navigated across the country from E to W.
Cheers,
