Gamin GPS Map60 test

On the way to Perth last week I took my GPS Map60 , I was surprised at the accuracy in the recorded speed and the Altitude was getting close compared to the screen on the back of the seat in front of me. we flew with the red company and I turned on the gps when we levelled out, the track record was great too, it had more than enough room to have done the return trip too. On the map I have overlayed the track readout .

Watch out, mate.

When I tried similar I was told in no uncertain terms to switch it off, put it away or it would be confiscated.

Now I don't agree with that or the supposed reasons behind it, but they have the power.

We innocents are the victims, as always.

When I was working (ATC) we occasionally used to take a handheld GPS and plot the flight from the passenger cabin and compare it with the navigation charts in great detail.

I can't see any problem because that type of GPS is a receiver and does not send out little spurts of radio frequency energy like phones and computers can.

Fifteen years ago some aircrew used to carry personal GPS devices in their flight bag "just in case". In those days quite a lot of aircraft did not have approved GPS installations but relied on Inertial systems (gyros) or ground based beacons for navigation.

Obviously if the Flight Attendant asks you to switch it off you simply comply. A GPS in a phone is a different kettle of fish and should not be activated in flight.

And don't activate an EPIRB! That would create chaos.
