Hi all, have listed an item for sale - here and on quokka. Unfortunately all the responses I have had so far would all appear to be typical scammers. (although none from the exploroz advert which suggests that EO management are screening them out). I know several of you out there have experienced the same when selling vehicles/vans. Is there a 'best' website to
check these email addresses to weed out the low life scum from the genuine enquirer? My only other thought is to advertise without an email contact and only provide a telephone number. Thoughts? Ta , doc.

not really, just need to be careful as a buyer and seller. i have had mor contacts from scammers from selling items than items i was looking to purchase even from this site. speak in person or direct contact other than email is the only safest way.

If they email you, and you think they are a scam, reply with. Due to scams I like to speak to the person interested in my products. Please contact me on XXXXXYYXXXX in future. All scams emails will be passed onto the AFP". Bet most of them won't call you.

These scammers are not in Australia therfore they will not care whether you report them to the federal police or not.

HI Josh- that is why I am thinking of only including my mobile phone number. Placing an ad online with quokka seemed easy but has turned out to be a waste of time. I think it would be better to phone them and put and ad in the paper and only include the phone number. I haven't had any scams from the EO ad so obviously Davids system is much better at precluding the scammers from the start.doc.

Selling a car a few months ago all of the scammers I was contacted by were initially via sms to my mobile. This is probably preferrable as they don't get access to your computer.
Just use common sense, it might be annoying but I don't see what you'd do about it. FYI all of
mine revolved around people that couldn't actually come to see the vehicle in person as they were either overseas or were working on offshore oilrigs so would get a representative to do it for them. They typically had hotmail, gmail or yahoo email addresses.

we only allow registered users to send responses to
classifieds here - and its not easy to register (or stay registered for long) if you're dodgy.
In fact the advice we give is never to respond to any dodgy response as this only validates your email to their system. whilst your ad is in our system your email is protected - you can only receive via the ad, not receive via your email account. so look for ways you can stay protected if that is what bothers you.
its a tough world out there - even iwth our sophisticaed IT platforms, we receive about 400 spam emails a day - makes it hard when there's a few genuine ones in the mix!! Computers eh - killing us all i think!!
take care, and best of luck selling your stuff

David,
An annoying thing about putting a ad on EO is getting "referred" to another site.

Michelle,
A few weeks ago I tried to give 2 BFG tyres away through the
forum. The Mod team jumped in & told me that was naughty & I had to "sell" them through the
shop, When I went to the Trader to put a give away ad was directed to another site. Sorry I cannot recall the name or details of the other site.
As a result 2 excellent tyres went to the tip.
Mike.

Hi Michael, thanks for explaining... sounds like you must have clicked an advert somehow.... the
classifieds is all contained on this site.
Oh

Another annoying thing about the internet are sites that steal your advert to direct buyers to their web site.
I put an ad on the Trading post and exploroz to sell a landcruiser and it ended up on some site Ive never heard of
Im still getting enquiries from genuinely interested buyers 18 months after I sold the vehicle.

Hi oz doc. You won`t get away from scammers by just putting your mobile number on the add. Advertised my camper trailer last year and they sent me a sms on my mobile asking to email them, so either way they will get to you.

Just like to add , this also extends to ebay - I sold one of my 4x4's on ebay - paid for - picked up - transfered
Months later i get an email from a person claiming to be the guy i sold the car too - having problems transferring rego -( i done it electronically at my end so all he had to do was front up with licence and away he goes ) can i please send the bill of sale to him again(different name ) - he asked me to scan and email to him .. i asked for his address again and i would send it snail mail ,remembering his address previous so would be a confirmation, -- he insisted on email .... i never sent
he tried some months later again - i just ignored
so something to also remember AFTER the sale also
