They were tough, they were ok offroad, not so great in thick sand and they were slow and sucked a lot ofjuice and were an assault on the ear drums.
End of story.

Much tougher then landys of the 60s, but just as slow and noisy. Datsun never updated them and once Toyota put a 4speed box in the 40/45 they become outdated. Especially after toyota brought out the much more powerfull (and to a degree more economical 2F(96kw again80). Willem done much remote touring in a updated G 60 with a 5speed box.
I still like the miltary lines of the old G60, and one updated with a Falcon cross flow motor and 5speed gearbox would be a good project.

Rugged & tuff "back in the day" late 60s early 70s they were a good truck, fast & powerful , my ist job we would tow a tandem trailer with up to ton of weight at 80 mph on hwy in Vic. , back then what else was around landrover ( no power house) jeeps early landcruisers were under powered & crap transmison
sure they had problems & so did most things re rust have you forgotten how quick holdens & others rusted out back then ???

Regards nick

I agree Nick, they would do 80mph, but that was flat out. They either had 5.1 or 4.875 diffs, not sure which now, so would have been screaming. but still about 15mph faster then our farm 1 1 a landy The cruisers ran 3.7 in the early days or 4.1 with the higher reving 2F so gave a better cruising speed. Mind you up untill I put extractors on my 2F it was reluctant to cruise at 100ks.
Good thread actually, brings back long forgotten memories. Had a mate who cracked the block on his 4l , worked out it was cheaper to replace the motor with an Alloy head xd motor, which also gave about 4mpg better economy and better cruising speed.

I agree totally....also why bother with a Y60 when you could have had an Austin Gypsy years sooner.

Back in the early 80's prior to the MQ being released Nissan was producing the G61 for the african market. The G61 had the 4lt motor, 4 speed gearbox and no antipolution gear that at the time was causing lots of issues with performance and fuel consumption.
Nissan Japan put 100 of them on the wrong boat and they ended up in australia. They then sat in a whrehouse a couple of years when some people in the know managed to buy then at significantly discounted prices.

A few mates and I bought a G60 (1973 I think) to use as a shooting wagon on a station up north of SA. It is truly a tank and will go almost anywhere. True it is noisy rough and ready but it is a great 4x4 which it was really designed for. Gets 10 out of 10 for what we want it for.

I had a G60 for about 10 years and did many trips in the outback. It was a rugged unit which never let us down even though we took it through some rough places.

The negatives were
1. very thirsty - had to fit a second tank to give a reasonable range
fitted a Holley carby with adjustable jets which improved things a lot
petrol was cheap then
2. noisy - mine had a 3 spd gearbox and the revs on hwy were rediculous
ended up fitting a 4 spd using a Marks adapter

traded it and my wife's then Camry wagon on a Pajero. Saw the G60 being driven by some hoons a month later. Felt sorry at how it was being treated.

cheers
