Tanami Track conditions?

Hi everyone, we're leaving for the Kimberley in just over a week, travelling via Alice Springs and the Tanami Track. I've kept an eye on the track conditions elsewhere on this site and am concerned that the NT section close to the WA border is still indicated as closed (as at 10/6/11). The listing refers to a NT government site that does not seem to list any closures or concerns about the Tanami. Can anyone confirm conditions on the Tanami? I've done a search on this site but can find no current information. Thanks.

I'd be interested to know the latest too - we're heading that way in 10 days (and counting).

Our trip organisers have said it's all good and open but I don't know where they get their info from.

Tanami Road runs thru NT & WA, so you need to check both States for track info.

We came up the Tanami 2 weeks ago and apart from the corrugations, it was fine. Remember Tilmouth Well is your last fuel stop at $2.05/Lt. You may get some fuel at Billiluna (restricted hours), but fuel in Halls Creek at the Coles Express was $1.659.

It's just under 1,100 kms from Alice Springs to Halls Creek.

We also heard that it rained last week on the Tanami, so it was a bit muddy. But a couple of days of sun, & it will have all dried up. There are no current closures or road warnings for the Tanami ATM.

I emailed NT Transport re the Tanami Road, as we leave next week for the Kimberley, this is their reply.

Hi John

Our road report website only lists roads that have restrictions to normal travel such as flooding, weight limits or road damage.

At the moment there are no such restrictions on the Tanami Road.

John

We have been off the air for the past 8 days travelling the Gibb River Road, so sorry it has taken so long to respond.

We stopped at the mast just north of Renahans Bore. Just check to see which way the wind is blowing then camp on the non dusty side of the track. This spot was a great overnight stop.

Laurie,

Thanks for your reply.

We camp at Renahans Bore last year down the back very nice.

We should have been camping at Tilmouth Well tonight, but due to tragic
circumstances are still stuck in Melbourne till next week.

Hope you had a great time on the Gibb River Road that is where we are heading.

Take care and travel safe.
Cheers,
John
