We're looking to travel from Kimba through to Glendambo in a couple of weeks time, via Thurlga, Kokatha and Kingoonya. Checking the road conditions on this site all roads in the area are listed as 'caution' but last updated in May - we will be checking with the local ranger before heading out from Kimba, but wondering if anyone on here may have traveled the area recently and can provide an update of the road conditions down there?

Those roads are usually well maintained and judging by the latest road report there is nothing to worry about. The section from Glendambo to Kingoonya was closed for a while when they got a heap of rain a couple of months ago, hence the caution for that section.

If you're heading up to Alice Springs, there's no real reason to do the Glendambo to Kingoonya section anyway. At Kingoonya there is good self-serve petrol and diesel and a great pub for a feed and the fuel is cheaper than Glendambo. You can take the road north from Kingoonya to the stuart Highway.

Great place to camp on the way up is Waltumba Tank camping area on the edge of Lake Gairdner.

Recommend you detour slightly and stay at Mt Ive. Campers there can get a key and drive out to the shore of Lake Gairdner - really interesting place.

I second that, Mt Ive and Lake Gairdner are fantastic spots, allow a couple of days at Mt Ive as they have a few great 4WDrive tracks that you can drive for a small fee, I'm taking a tour group there in ealry August and then up to Kingoonya (and eventually to Davenport Ranges via Boggy hole) and few other great places, can't wait, gosh I love Australia!

Thanks all for the comments... Yes we'll be travelling back to Alice after a trip to Adelaide and then out to Kimba to catch up with rello's... Good info about the servo at Kingoonya - we had thought about heading up to the highway from there but thought a good fuel stop would be in order first. We'll be heading down to Adelaide via the highway so we'll compare the prices at Glendambo on the way down vs Kingoonya on the way back ;-)

Thanks
Geoff

Geoff,

Another vote for Mt Ive if you are in the area. The scenery is just stunning... We were there just after the rains in March.
