Hi Desert Travellers.

We are planning to come back into WA from Alice early Sept, via the Gary Junction Rd, Papunya to Kintore; then down the Sandy Blight Rd to the GCR.

Some of my reading is that permits for the SBJ Rd are being reviewed.

Has anyone had recent success obtaining permits for our planned route pls?

Cheers.

G'day John,

We have submitted requests for the permits you note and recieved them without any drama.

Permit details are included in both this site and relevent Hema maps.

Have a great trip.

Hi John

Quite often there is always a lot of talk. As you would be well aware, you will need at least 4 permits for the trip. The NT permits are the quickest and the WA permits can sometimes take a little longer.

It is a great drive and you will enjoy it.

Cheers

Good to see you're getting back out and about this year John. Concur with Stephen on the matter. Theres's always been talk and it centres around the actual maintenance of the track and who's responsible for it. Had no dramas with permits two years running and would suggest that you won't either. A great trip although the corrugations are fearsome (as per usual). You'd be an old hand at that by now anyway. Also be aware that the bore situated roughly half way is producing salty water so do not rely on it for drinking water. Make sure you do the Sir Frederick Range detour as well.

Cheers Mick

Hi Mick

One question that I have been meaning to ask you for a very long time is when you did the SBJ Track, which way did you travel, North to South, or South to North.

It may seem a very silly question, because I know that we travelled it very similar times, but one day that we called an early camp in the Desert Oaks, there was one solo Troopy heading south with a Canadian Flag on its aerial. It stopped on the track and we thought it must have been in trouble. I called it up on the radio to see if all was OK and the male driver said all was OK, but was waiting for the others in his group to catch up. After a few minutes the vehicle took off slowly and I went for a walk over the sand dune. I was away for half an hour or so and did not hear or see any other vehicles - was that your group??

Cheers

ps The drive up to the top if Sir Frederick Range was a good little bit of up hill rock driving and I could have done with a 2" body lift that would have stopped those very large rocks scraping under the Prado..LOL

You need an OKA Stephen :-)
That was the first trip we did in OKA196 in 2003, before we built the camper on it.
