Hi everyone,

We are currently in Darwin and are thinking of doing Cape York and the Peninsular Development Road. We have a caravan that we will be leaving at Cooktown, and we will be tenting from there on into the cape region. My question is can anyone inform us of what the road conditions are like? We hope to be there the last week of July early August.

Thanks Andrea and Bruce

Hello Andrea and Bruce
We have very similar plans to you. We plan to leave our caravan in Port Douglas on the 3rd August and take the tent with us for our trip to the Cape. We are travelling in a black Patrol so watch out for us. We are looking forward to the many experiences a Cape York trip provides. We are flexible with our timing and travel route dependent on the conditions.

Hi there,

We will keep our eye's peeled for you. We are hoping the roads are open if not my husband suggested an alternate trip the Savanna Way inc Lawn Hill, Roper Bar etc. Just hoping someone has some info on the Development and Telegraph roads before we make our final descion. Who knows a month is a long time in terms of road conditions....

G`day Andrea & Bruce,

We are leaving for the Cape on Monday 27th, 5 days time, towing an Off-Road C/van and intend taking it all the way to the Tip/Top.( within 15 km that is)
The info I have received is that the PDR is doable, Graders are working and have completed doing a lot of it.

The OTL Track is a different story, we are not going to do it, I can`t see any sense in damaging my vehicle for no good reason, besides I can`t afford a replacement. LOL

We will be there for about 8 weeks, leaving last week of August for the EO National Gathering at Silverton and then home (Victoria) after that.

Keep a look out for a Brown 60 Series Landcruiser with a White Boat on top and towing a Supreme Getaway caravan, that`s us.

Keep safe,

Scrubby.

Hi there Scrubby,

We shall keep an eye out for you..Well my husband has decided on doing Suvanna Way including lawn hill and surrounding area's like normanton Karumba, then head to cooktown to drop the van off and head up the PDR. So we may see you along the way. We should be there about the 1st week of August......

Travel Safe

Andrea

Gidday Scrubby
I am at Atherton just come back from up there, road at this stage on the whole is pretty good, a few corrugated areas but nothing like the Anne Beadell at any stage, still a trickle of water a some of the dips, pays to look carefully as some are a bit rough and the exits can be bumpy at times.
If having trouble, getting bogged is fun, go the OTR, heard a few stories at Podsand beach, vehicle drowned and fridge, people injured with the car dropping of the bank and the bullbar hitting the bed.
I personally try to avoid getting bogged and having trouble, so went the easy way.
A high light for me was getting picked up on the beach to be ferried to Thursday Island. Must be good value compared with a hydrauliced motor and a new fridge
Cheers
Russ
