HI guys - sorry for silly question , been such a long time since i had to replace a thermostat - got a new one for the nissan(Patrol 4.2 tdi ) as it just was not warming up with these 2- 3 deg mornings - took thermostat cover off --- and No thermostat

So with that said -for the life of me i cant remember the correct way it goes in -- ie all the spring assy ( longer part goes into engine block ( downwards ) or upwards facing thermostat cover ( which connects to top radiator hose )

cant find my nissan book anywhere grrr

You put it in to the engine with the spring assy in ie the way you mentioned first, cheers Mark.

i would be a little careful until you get some more info, in the old days the thermostat was ALWAYS on the top hose and the outlet was always what held the thermostat........
Not anymore eh, a lot now have the thermostat on the BOTTOM hose, tucked down the side someware and out of site, and sometines SIDEWAYS with a very small breather hole that must always be placed at the top......... but dont think you are the first to get caught also, many have been baffled at the "missing" thermostat ....
Cheers

Yeah spot on Joe. I remember my old VL commodore playing up and thought Id change the thermostat, after much looking and asking it was located in the bottom hose, also my prado 95 series 2001 T/D was also in the bottom hose and what a prick of a job that was for the mechanic to get to, then to put a new one back in, was fancy nancy 2 stage thingy and yes it had to also be put back in at the correct angle to operate properly. Gone are the days of my old hilux with 3x14ml bolts on the very top with just a cork gasket to seal the old girl up lol. I seriously would have hated having to get to the thermostat in the old prado out in the scrub some where, was bloody ridiculous spot up under the turbo as well, the mechanic had a few skinned knuckles by the time he finished, was the best $40 I ever handed over to a mechanic..........
