Hello,
A few things that I would consider:
1. Jeeps haven't got the best reputation for build quality or reliability.. (Sorry Jeep fans) However they are an excellent 4WD when they are running. Just expensive to fix
2. Pathfinders are a good solid vehicle, but in a manual have a very week clutch(If your looking at hard 4WDriving) and a average 5th gear for strength. From what I have seen from the ones around town, they are prone to a bit of rust aswell when they are 4 - 5yrs old. (But that could be due to beach work and poor maintenance)
3. I never thought I would say this, but now after owning my first Mitsubishi (2010 Challenger). I don't think you can go past them. The Diesel engines are excellent and very economical. The biggest let down of the Pajero is its limited wheel travel. But this is the trade off for full Independentsuspension.
A friend of mine has a NP Pajero, has traveled around OZ towing a 22ft van, loves going bush. I would highly recommend a Mitsubishi.

All in all though, have a good look around, if you have a good mechanic get them to give it the once over. Have a good look under body for impacts / oil leaks flogged out unis and any other tell tail signs of a harder than usual life. Good luck but be careful. Don't buy someone else's problem.

Its meant to be a tough 4WD, but its a thirsty V6 petrol. Honestly I don't know too much about them.

I think the Pathfinder is a great car and value for money. Yes, on gas is a good idea because they definately get thirsty. As for rust issues, mine has been on beaches it's entire life and no rust yet.....

I have a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8. Fuel efficiency you are after. Don't bother. In XS of 15 litres per 100 km around town. They are cheap for a reason, but do tow well, but expensively. It has clocked up just over 200K and is not giving me any trouble.

Hi James. I owned a 2002 pathfinder from new and was very impressed with the build quality and the car in general. The motor is very robust. With most V6 petrol engines they tend to be a bit thirsty. The fuel tank is a bit pidly (79 Ltrs I think) but to offset this I put gas on which in effect doubled my travelling distance.
I think on petrol I was getting around 13/14 ltrs per 100.
Off road the car was quiet capable but I wouldn't go rock hopping.
I would highly recommend the Pathfinder.

I had a Pathfinder and couldn't fault it really except for the fuel economy so I put in on lpg. I now have a 2004 diesel Jeep Grand built in Austria by Mercedes and it has been pretty good especially with fuel economy (under 10 l/100km). Build quality on the diesels is noticably better than the petrol. Both are excellent on sand but I prefer the diesel. Never owned a Mitsubishi 4wd. Mike

I had a diesel 3.2 Pajero GLS auto & it was a great vehicle. I now have an NT. On sand it was a weapon. Touring, towing and general highway use it was exceptional. I have had Patrols,Cruiser & Range Rover. The best tourer of them all was the Pajero. IMHO a very underated 4WD. Have a drive of all the vehicles you fancy & don;t be put off by the auto versions. I don't know about the other two vehicles mentioned but the NP 2003 had a triptronic auto & you could drive it in manual or auto mode depending on your desire at the time. A magic tow vehicle plenty of torque & great overtaking ability. Have fun looking.

Check out the Pathfinder ForumPathfinder Club of Australia, there's plenty of knowledge and advice there for prospective owners. I'd bet there's a similar Jeep and Mitsubishi forum too.
Haven't stopped smiling!
