I have just bought a Hema Navigator and cannot use it fully as I cannot download "Windows Mobile Device Centre" from Windows Update. This is essential software without which nothing much happens. I have Vista 32 bit system.
Furthermore half the maps on the disk from HN5i Memory Map cannot be loaded. The system locks up. All in all, I have spent a whole day, up to now, trying to fix problems I bought for $809 without success

Can anyone help?

Hi George

Firstly I do not know why you wanted to upgrade a new unit out of the box.
There is no need to load any of the maps, they are pre installed on the micro SD card.

It should be a matter of connecting the unit up to power, mount the unit in a suitable location inside your vehicle, pressing the power button and go from there.
Once the main screen come on, you then select one of the 3 navigation systems that you want to use.

Do you have the card inserted properly?

Other than that it sounds very strange. Have you contacted the place where you purchased it from.

No doubt there will be other that make come to your rescue.

Cheers

Thanks for your interest. I need to couple the unit with my laptop. To do that my laptop has to recognise the unit. See page 10 of the instruction book and paragraph 2.2. I need " Windowsw Mobile Device Centre" as a download.

Hi

Try downloading the "Windows Mobile Device Centre" from the HN website. You may have more joy...

HN5i Software & Updates

Cant help with the Memory Map problem. Could be a variety of issues (not necessarily related to HN) and information provided is a bit vague. Where are you trying to load maps on the disc to..the PC?

Cheers

Thanks Greg. This is the best answer. This will solve the problem of downloading the software "Windows Mobile Device Centre".

My other problem is that the CD supplied only partly loaded The Memory Maps
onto my laptop and half the maps are missing. I shall tackle Hema about that.

Oh well - my misytake. I dont have Vista but just read info from others that said ActSync wont work with Vista...

Example

though that was a while ago...maybe it is dependant on a range of factors.

Either way suggest George gives Windows Update the flick and use the Hema update page to download Windows Mobile Device Center.

Cheers

Greg,
The manual for the HN5i does say Mobile Device Centre for win7 & Vista, Active Sync for XP. You can sleep tonight now LOL.
When I opened my mouth yesterday was going from memory & didn't fully read the post.

Hi
There was never any doubt in my mind that WMDC was the recommended option for Vista (even if AS does work as well) so wasnt losing any sleep.

This thread prompted me to load WMDC onto my Win 7 netbook. It connected to the Hema fine, though I did note that it also connected as an external hard drive without using WMDC anyway. So not sure if AS or WMDC is needed for simple file transfer anyway. Maybe for software updates?

Cheers

I would be happy to help George, you'll just need to explain what the problem is a bit further.

Are you trying to load new maps (I.e. purchased after buying the Hema) or are you trying to get the original maps to work?

To get around your first problem of Windows Mobile Device Centre, crack out the SD card adaptor and shove it straight into your pc and work on it there.

My best advice to anyone fiddling with maps (or any settings) on these devices is to do it with the SD card our of the navigator. Also, I would strongly recommend backing up this card the moment you take it out of the box. Being a bit of nerd boy, first thing I did was dive into the memory and have a fiddle. Bad move. Very easily corrupted and disjointed file strucutre. Luckily I learnt my lesson from pulling electrics apart as a kid and had a complete copy that I could replace the now buggered copy on the SD card.

Let me know what you're trying to do George and I'll see what I can do.

Thanks for your offer to help. I have Vista on my laptop and it required "Windows Mobile Device Centre' to recognise the Hema unit. I have been given Hema's download centre and that has solved the problem. Windows Update was not allowing me to download it.
