Has anybody been to Bathurst Head recently, if so what are the road conditions, and how was the fishing and crabbing? We will be arriving at Bathurst Head on the 8th August 2011 for ten days on the water. Any feedback will be much appreciated.

G'day,

From a friend of a friend, the gate at Kalpower crossing had been locked but is now open. I have not heard how they went but they had been waiting for some weeks for the gate to be unlocked and I believe the road is open. I presume they have fished the place dry (mongrels) but if I hear any more I'll let you know.

Kind regards

G'day Glenn,

I have not yet spoken directly to the traveller but I have some early feedback via his wife. The road in was slow and boggy they took 8/9 hours and took much the same a couple of days ago coming back out. My contact was towing a boat and I have not seen his setup so I don't know if this was what was holding him back. He has done a couple of trips to BH and is familiar with the area and the roads/tracks. I may see him in the next week or two and may be able to provide a more detailed report before your 5/8 departure. BTW they caught heaps of fish.

Kind regards

Hey Baetit,

Thanks for the update, we also are towing boats, so it looks like a long haul in FUN FUN. We have 5 vehicles in our party and 10 guys so many hands might make light work but lots of it LOL.

Heaps of fish sounds great, we have a few guys that have never fished in those areas before so it will be interesting.

Cheers
Glenn

G'day Glenn,

I couldn't catch up with the traveller but for further info. The spring tides were at the end of july and apparently the mudflats would be flooded and impassable - so they were keen to get out before that. I presume that by the time you get there they will be neaping. Just keep an eye out on the tides in case the spring clashes with your departure.

There was an issue with some shooters that caused the indigenous owners to be upset. Apparently their vehicle burnt to the ground and caused a scrub fire - I'm getting this third hand so have no details.

BTW they caught no barra but plenty of large grunter and lots of big mud crabs.

Have a great time.

Sorry if this reply is a bit late, but we have only just picked internet coverage up again. We were in the Lakefield NP this past week and although we didn't go all the way through to Bathurst Head, we did go across the river at Kalpowar and the gate was definately open. Plenty of other cars and trailers etc. heading through there. The roads we covered were fine.
