G'day, Joe, Mel & Kids

I think the thread you are talking about, was the one I put up, and you made a comment on.

Your new unit looks the same as the one I bought, but I haven't had time to set it up yet. Also, I bought a new microsd card, to put Oziex and Natmaps on, but it hasn't arrived yet, so I can't do much.

I am hoping, all I have to do is put Oziexplorer CE verion on the new card, put Natmaps in a folder in the Oziex program,, change the old card for the new one, and off it goes. If I am wrong, I hope someone will let us know!

Original thread was 86950

Hey Davem you might understand it, Below is a copy n paste of about the best i can find on the net but i cant find the file they are talking about.....

Well this the way it works with my brothers GPS. You get the sd card and look at it on your comp. You then create a new folder on the sd card for oziexplorer, i named mine ozi. This is where you put all your maps and the exe file.

Then you find the folder on the SD card that the software looks for when you select navigation on the GPS. My brothers folder is called MobileNavigator. There is a text file in there that when edited you can get oziexplorer to load when selected.

The file is named mapcfg.ini looks like this below when opened in notepad.

[BUTTON1]
EXEPATH=\route66\ROUTE66N7.exe
ENABLED=1
CAPTION=R66

[BUTTON2]
EXEPATH=\CJT\Navi.exe
ENABLED=0
CAPTION=NDRIVE

[BUTTON3]
EXEPATH=\IGO8\IGO8.exe
ENABLED=1
CAPTION=IGO8
FUNCTION=HandCalendar

What i have done is change the second button so it looks like this

[BUTTON2]
EXEPATH=\OZI\OZIEXPLORERCE.exe
ENABLED=1
CAPTION=OZI

This now gives the option for the oziexplorer in the navigation selection. and there you go. All done. you will have to have the maps and software for it to work though. All you have to do is plug it back into the GPS and off you go.

That's all i know about it at the moment as i haven't really fiddled around with it too much. Also, as i said this was the case for my brothers GPS and others maybe different. I'm not too sure how all the others work. Hope this helps.

G'day Joe

From my old computer programming lessons in 1985 (things have changed a lot!), the example you have put up suggests to me that the fella that has changed the [BUTTON 2] instruction, has given himself an extra option in the navigation menu: ie he can select Route 66 (Button 1) Or Oziexplorer (Button 2), making it like a Hema Navigator.

I just want to put Ozi on mine, got a Tomtom for city stuff. I'm just planning on (hopefully) setting up Ozi and Natmaps on an sd card, and swapping for the original one.

How's things with the roadhouse?

Cheers, Dave

One other thing,

I think that things may be easier for us now, as the operating system is Windows CE, and is 'unlocked'. The way I see it, we just have to put a program in the system that Win CE can read (like OZI), and away we go.

That example you found was probably on a 'locked' system, and had to be hacked into, to get it to read the program. I will be thinking long and hard before I change any files.

I am fortunate that my son in law was a computer guru for BHP, before he joined the police force, so if I get stuck, I can call on him. I will let you know anything I find out.

Cheers, Dave

Joe, what you have there is a generic Chinese GPS unit, just like mine. Basically it has "iGO8" loaded as the on road nav system which you access by touching the "Navigation" icon on the main screen. iGO8 is not bad as far as on road nav programs go but with this unit you'll probably find it "freezes on resume" (won't restart correctly after stop/starting the car). Common problem with these units. A better program is "iGo Primo", an updated program from the same company. Also you'll probably find it has NO australian maps loaded..

For Ozi you need to download and install the program on your SD card.

OziCE download simply expands and creates a folder structure when you run it. YOu just copy the entire folder tree to a folder (which you need to create) on the SD card.

To run it ....
The unit only has one launch icon, the "Navigation" icon, so you have to change the target for this icon.
From the main screen select "settings>more>Navi_path>then browse to the SD card>Ozicefolder>Ozice.exe

Now when you press "navigation" on the mani screen it will launch Ozi.

Maps...
You need to convert all your maps to "Ozf2" format. The converter is availabe as a free download form the Ozi web site. This is the only map format OziCE supports. Place all the converted maps in the Ozice>maps folder on the SD card and you're good to go.

Hope that gets you going..

Yes, OziCE is for portable devices. Also requires it's own licence.

BTW, it's MUCH faster to copy stuff to the SD card if you can mount it directly in you laptop's card reader, if it has one.

Hello

Think you will need to download the wince_core_runtime_arm.zip version of OziCe

OziCe webpage

Unzip the contents to your PC into a folder called OziExplorerCe then copy that folder to your SD card. For it to work you will need to either click on the file called OziExplorerCE.exe or have one of the screen icons (as you posted before) linking to the OziExplorerCE.exe

e.g.

EXEPATH=\OZI\OZIEXPLORERCE.exe

I am not sure if this is the correct file path linking to the SD card though?

On the unlocked Mio I had once it was defined as

SDCard\OziExplorerCE\OziExplorer.exe

If you get stuck as this point soemone should know the facts.

Cheers
Greg

Woops sorry - bit late with that one.

Licence for OziCe is different but only costs ~$40 so worth it.

Now i will take it outside and see if it works....
Next big step for "joekind" is to load maps, i have the set of "natmaps" so will have a crack at doin it..
Again thanks guys for your help.

Hey Dave (is there a song like that ??? hahaha)
I have not forgotten you eh, thats why i am posting my progress on the off chance there are others out there with very limited understanding of how to do it ........... like me....
I am now up to the stage of the "natmaps" but i think i have run out of luck as i did not get an extra card and have simply made an extra file on the one that came with it and i dont think it will have the room (memory) to hold the maps....
I will have a crack at it tomorrow and let you know how i go ... sux because i cant get anything like that here, 500klms away for that stuff so that may delay it a week ..
And yep all is well here, busy with "behind the scenes" stuff but it is all working to a good FYI for all ..
Cheers Dave, we may still be calling on "mrbitchi" again eh

G'day Mr Bitchi, The Explorer & Joe

On my particular generic Chinese unit, I have a dedicated icon called 'Navipath', which tells you like you said it. The last part reads "igo8\igo8.exe".. I understand from what you said, that this needs to be changed to oziexplorerce\oziexplorerce.exe

This sounds very reasonable! Even makes sense to me ...... but how do you physically get into it to do it?

Joe,
I read on the Ozi site, then had a look around the www. .... Natmaps .ecw files, & .map files need to be converted to ozfx3 files. I think someone mentioned this earlier, maybe even me!, but as some others on the www were saying, this takes a lot of time, and I mean a considerable number of hrs. I started doing Natmaps dvd1 off my hard drive, not the disc (would be too slow), at about midnight last night, watched the numbers spinning round for a while, turned off the monitor,( left the machine running though!), and left it overnight. It was still converting at 7:30 this morning. DVD1 is now complete, and I have started DVD2, I think that will be a bit quicker, but will still take some time. For the time being, I have created a folder on my desktop to use as a destination folder, till I get my new sd card.

Yep, you are gunna run outta room on that sd card, I sorta guessed that from the start, and ordered an 8gb sdhc card for this purpose. Hopefully this will take Ozi ce, Natmaps in Ozfx3 format, and leave me some room for some maps I save.

Converting to OZFX3 is sorta like converting a regular cd to mp3, the file size decreases, but still DVD1 of Natmaps, with a couple of saved maps of mine, took up 2.3 gb space in the temp folder I created.

Hope this is not too confusing, Dave

P.S. Writing this on my laptop, not game to use my desktop for anything else at the moment, don't wanna slow it down!

hey guess what, i can answer that for you (the first question) and it is not that hard to do at all, i am at work so will let you know how to do it when i get home later...
The map thingy i actually dont think you have to convert them but i cant try it as i dont have a big enough card yet, i will try a smaller map and let you know..

To change the target, on the screen where it says "igo8\igo8.exe", on the left there is an icon like lines of text. Press that and a screen pops up that says "Navigation Software List".
Press the icon "SDDMC", then "OziCE", then "OziexplorerCE.exe". Then press the back arrow at top of the screen to get back to the main menu.

Pressing "Navigation" will now launch OziCE.
You can do the reverse to use the on-street nav again any time you want. You can't run both together though, not enough system resources.

When you get the bigger SD card, just use something like Robocopy to make an exact copy of your original and then copy this to the new card. Simple :)

Cheers,
John

G'day John

YOU'RE A BL@@DY GENIUS!

Nothing better than step by step instructions ... that actually work!

When I was doing computer programming in the 80's, everything was done at a DOS prompt, these 'easy to use' touch screens get me confused.

I have the trial version of Ozi CE up on the screen now, tapping buttons to see what they do ... lol

Now I know it works fine, I will pay the license fee, and get the Natmaps installed on the new card.
Oh, 1 point. Were you suggesting I put IGO8 on the same card as Ozi, then just 'tap' my way to the navi path, depending on which program I want to use? Sounds good if that can be done, would only take a few seconds each time you changed. Lets face it, no matter how much we long to be exploring ALL the time, reality for the average Joe (or Dave, lol) means more often than not, we are working, and travelling is down the bitumen someplace. OK Joe is different!

Cheers, and many thanks, Dave

Yes Dave. I currently have the choice of 4 different programs I can run. Just depends on how much room there is on the SD card.

Hint..
In the iGo directory there is a sub dir called "content>maps" which obviously holds all your maps. As supplied it is full of European maps which you can safely delete, freeing up lots of space :)

Cheers,
John

G'day Joe & John

Got Ozi up and running with 1 section of Australia (Natmaps zone 56) just to see if it all worked. It does, and I am very pleased. It's been a long weekend of fiddling, but I have to look on the positive side of things .... at least I had the time to spare this weekend.

Joe, total size of Natmaps DVD's 1 & 2 = 4.4Gb after conversion to OZFX3 format, so yes, you will need a bigger card. Conversion took about 14 hrs total.

Thanks to all for their time and patience, but I am not saying goodby yet ... when I have ALL of Australia on there, and up and running, I will be really happy! Just have to get that bigger card (should be here tomorrow or Tuesday), and put it all together in a permanent form.

Cheers, Dave

I finally got my SD card today, got the 16GB so plenty of room, now to load the maps ????
The first question, with the NATMAP 2008 DVD's do i just copy the folder called "MAPS" to the SD card ????
And do i NEED to convert them to the "ozfx3" format given i have room on the sd card for it all ..... if so what is the quickest way to do it .....

G'day Joe

I got my card during the week too, but only got time to 'fiddle' with things last night for a while.

As I mentioned earlier, I have converted all my Natmaps to OZFX3 files, but it took ages, (14 hrs on a reasonable speed computer).

I have my Natmaps on my hard drive, and converted them from hard drive to a desktop folder I created. I reckon trying to go from DVD to OZFX3 would be hell slow, and work the guts out of your dvd drive.

According to the Ozi website, that is the best thing to do,(convert them), as they take less time to load and manipulate, due to their smaller file size, (the GPS unit has a slower processor, and less ram, compared to your laptop or desktop).

Not sure if you NEED to, website says .ecw files will work.

Now I am trying to work out how to send tracks and waypoints to the gps, I keep getting a message saying 'cannot connect to a Garmin gps'. I suppose it is in the configuration settings, as everything was set up for my Garmin 60CSx.

I guess I will get there eventually, hope Mr Bitchi comes on to help!. Like he said, you can put IGO8 on the same card, and just change the navi-path to swap between road and off road mapping.

Cheers, Dave
