Well that's the reports on other forums by people who were told by the info centre last weekend. It's more than likely Eyre Creek will remain flooded for many months yet.
Anyone contacted them since the weekend to confirm ?

Doesn't look good, just checked the Mt Dare website again.

I was hoping to being going west from Birdsville in 3 weeks.

Was heading that way on 19th August..but may have to change plans

Latest is... "Simpson Desert National Park remains closed due to flooding at Eyre Creek approximately 63km west of Birdsville. This will be reviewed 28th July 2011".

This will be cutting it fine even for a late Aug Crossing - Wow!

Cheers Tony

I to will be hoping to cross the desert in early August. I just finished talking to the Birdsville Visitor Centre and they informed me.
quote" an inspection was conducted on Sunday 3 July and that another inspection will be done next week about Wednesday and they expect a crossing to be found then, please ring us back then and we will have better info" unquote. Lets hope.

Keep in contact with Don at National Parks. They may have a detour in place which will be another 70k's or so on the trip. At least the desert will look a treat.

I was thinking of crossing myself. Does this mean the most appropriate direction would be East to West? Travelling the other way may result in having to turn back at the Eastern end and retrace your journey if the creek closes again while you are in transit. At least you can't even start if the creek closes the other way. Also, some cars may have difficulty negotiating the creek even if it is technically open. I would hate to find that out after 500 odd kms. Mike

We were the first vehicles across the Eyre creek flood bypass late May last year . It was running a metre deep and swift - not for the faint hearted. We ended up with one bent drive shaft on a Navara a nd a bent lower control arm on a Cruiser ( out of our seven vehicles) . Unfortunately we had to repeat the whole process in reverse a couple of days later courtesy of a busted spring on the lead vehicle!

Well you could always try another activity with all the water about.
This is what my son got up to at Poeppel corner on Lake Poeppel on our trip in early June
