Hi folks,

whereis.com.au shows the drive from Arkaroola Village to Wilpena as 218.4km and 5.5 hours, so am interested in suggestions for a roadside or free camp between them to break up the long, slow trip.

Have found thread #77434 which offeres Mulga View as an option, and I've emailed them to see whether a 4WD and rough-road pop-top could access them. I also note that Blinman has a few options though reviews are not favourable, so am keen for suggestions.

If you've driven straight from Arkaroola to Wilpena, would also be interested in your perspective in doing the drive in one go.

TIA
Sass.

I find that time calculation very suspect. We have had no trouble - twice - towing our off road van from Broken Hill to Arkaroola, via Yunta and Frome Downs, in one day. We had some short stops along the way and still got into Arkaroola by about 4pm.
Another time - same van - did Wilpena - Martins Well - Yunta - Broken Hill - with ease.
Both those trips are much longer in kms than Wilpena to Arkaroola, and with more gravel road.

Agree with Wendy having done that trip on many occasions.
Other than a comfort stop for a cuppa and a sanga.... there's no need to stop for an overnighter unless you actually want to.

5.5hrs? We did it easily in about 2.5 hrs in a Holden Statesman.

There is a one way traffic loop in the Gammon Ranges and there is camping in there too.
Beautiful country.

I will second this suggestion. Awesome scenery.

We towed our off road camper through here & spent quite a few days in here camping & walking. Take it easy & you will be fine.

Cheers

Hi Tia

Stick to the back way heading down past Wertaloona and make your way to Chambers Gorge for your free camp, it is a top location, but make sure that you check out the Aboriginal petroglyph's. When you get to Wirrealpa, head for Blinman, as this is a very pretty drive. From there it is a straight run through to Wilpena.

Make sure that you give yourself lots of time at Wilpena and the Flinders, as there is a lot to see in the area.

Cheers

Just confirming, accessing and free-camping at Chambers Gorge is possible with a van?

The track in is fine for a CT or Van.

You just need to take it slowly across some of the creek crossings, as some are full of shale!

It is a beautiful spot.

Hi

You should have no problems at all. It is a great spot and you may even want to stay there a few days, as there are some good walks in the area.

As for Wilpena area, we personally prefer the Pound, and non powered sites, as they usually tell you to camp where you like. Good shower blocks and a real out of the way camping atmosphere. If this is your first visit to the Flinders, base yourself at Wilpena for at least a week, and do your side trips from there.

Enjoy on of South Australia's best locations.

Cheers

Another vote for Chambers Gorge.
Assuming it's the camper in your photo you shouldn't have any problems.

Those trip calculators vary a fair bit, so I don't know how they do their calculating.

Just check that it might be ignoring dirt roads and taking you the long way on bitumen, hence the over-estimation of travel time.

5.5 hours?

Must be sending you down goat tracks.

The roads are very good and most are high speed dirt.

Whereis says the average speed is about 40Kph, 40Kph would be the lowest speed you may do coming out of the Village and that's only for a very very short distance.

I would say maybe 5.5 hours stopping to look at things along the way and for smoko and lunch but no way 5.5 hours of constant driving.

You also might want to look at Rawnsley Park Station to stay at instead of Wilpena.

Remember Wilpena and surrounding areas are a national park and require you to pay if camping and no pets.

Thanks olcoolone.

Interestingly, Rawnsley Park are charging $43pn for a powered site for 2A2C, whereas Wilpena Pound Campground sites are cheaper at $35.50pn for a powered site or $24.50pn unpowered.

Maybe because Rawnsley is better and Wilpena have to undercut to get unknowing campers to stay there.

Wilpena is owned by a large chain and I'm sure if they could they would be charging a premium.

When people think the Flinders they always think Wilpena Pound but there are a lot of other better camp areas.

Have a look...

We choose Wilpena unpowered sites over Rawnsley Park - like the atmosphere and proximity to activities.

Arkaroola to Wilpena in 3 hours a few years back, a few days after rain so it had some rough patches. Towing a camper van. Last Wednesdays rain will make it similar conditions. Wilpena to Blinman is all sealed now which will speed it up more if you go that way.

Some of the stations have camping which could be good if you really want to split the trip into 2 days.
