Would appreciate thoughts on this vehicle to be used to tow a caravan of approx 3t and to use obviously without caravan when the need arose to go exploring. Looking at purchasing about a 2003 to 2005 model and tossing up between one of these and same year approx standard Land Cruiser. Thanks Brian

I with a V8 Troopy, and my brother-in-law with HZJ78R towed 3 tonne vans around Australia together in 2008.
He seemed have the power he wanted, and he calculated that he was using a bit less fuel than me.

I have a 2000 model - diesel- and it tows a medium-sized van well. Turbo would give better fuel consumption towing 3t.

Whatever you do, don't use 5th gear towing .. use 4th .. its a direct drive, whereas 5th is a side shaft and will probably disintegrate.

I did tests with 4th and 5th gear towing 3 tonne at 90k/hr with a V8 Troopy and there wasn’t a measurable saving in fuel. I won’t use 5th for towing heavy loads, after talking to a number of experienced users and repairers of these vehicles.

The standard landcruiser would be my choice Brain , its a significantly more stable vehicle , more capable with longer travel suspension, a lot more comfortable , wider and more powerful engine dependant of course.

Thanks Robin and others who have replied. I think you are right about the Landcruiser and I am pursuing that option at present. Regards Brian
