Just returned home yesterday after a fantastic 5000km trip from
Toowoomba up to
Mission Beach. Very sad to see the devastation from Yasi. We were very surprised at the excellent condition of the roads considering a monster tore the place apart. Managed to do a couple of tracks up in the Misty Mountains we didn’t know they were there until we headed up to
Millaa Millaa Falls. We couldn’t believe out luck with them being open. We went to all the waterfalls from
Millstream to
Wallaman Falls all open for us to see. There are still many folk waiting for repairs or in some cases new homes to be built like out
Tully heads. We didn’t realise the storm surge caused so much damage. Yet a local we had a chat with who lost her house at Hull Heads, was so positive and asked about how the
Darling Downs recovery is going. Every and I mean every business be it servo's the
Tully bakery, caravan
park (big4 Mission) were so friendly. They need our business, it was good for us as the car parks at the waterfalls were nearly empty the roads weren’t congested we didn’t need to book ahead and there were room in the free camps. But they do need the tourist to return. On the way home we stayed at the Rollingstone big4. Again just turned up about 4 and got a powered site right on
the Beach. Couldn’t believe our luck. The sunset and sun rise was to die for. We knew it was going to be our last warm day/night in the camper as back home we were returning to -5. Brrr.
Took in one more waterfall at the Burdekin still cant drive over. Stayed at Macrossan
free camp. Its great having a chat with all those
grey nomads camped up (our 10 year plan). Oh the Fairbairn still has a trickle running over. Couldn’t believe the damage to the Canarvon Hwy. Back to reality and now planning our next trip.

Thanks for that report Sharon, unfortunately we are not heading up that way in the foreseeable future. We stayed at
Mission Beach about 18 months or so ago & in our opinion was a realy fantastic place to spend some time.
My wife & I have not travelled Oz as extensively as many others on EO, but I reckon
Mission Beach &
Cooktown are two of the nicest
places to visit & we would welcome the opportunity to retrace our steps & head back up that way. Cheers & Safe travelling.
