Hi all!
I doubt anyone will remember us, we were regular on the
forum about 18 months ago, planning 'the big one'. As life so happened, instead along came the latest 'little one' instead. :)
SO we are now planning the BIG one for Jan next year, when bubby is about 7 months old and CAN NOT WAIT. :))
We would love to meet anyone in
Adelaide with a 4wd and some rug rats in a similar situation, who might like to catch up for some bevvies, maybe a BBQ and/ or a 4wd day or two...
Hubby has asked me to jump on and enquire re tyres. His are now due to be replaced and he is wondering from anyone who has done a few bigger trips, the importance of tyres and any recommendations? He has heard good things about Coopers, and the tyre man is recommending Maxxis??
We have a 2004 hilux 4wd.
Thank you, and HI AGAIN. :)
Lia

What is more importent then brand is to get light truck construction rather then passenger car construction.
Coopers are long lasting, but the ones we have on Sals Jack are a bit dodgy on wet tar(but I have discovered they are 5 years old). Personally I like bridgestone 694, very good all rounder.
Good luck Pete

Went to Bridgestone in
Cairns asking about tyres to replace the originals on my Hilux.
They have just got in what they called the replacement for the 694. I think it might be 697.
They only have it in All terrain 205r16 LT at the moment. Not sure of profile. They didn't even have a brochure yet.
The full range of sizes of the new model won't be available until Feb next year they said.
They were cheap. $234 retail fitted. Looked good too.
I don't know what prices are like elsewhere, but I would imagine that supply would be the same with the big company stores working together.

Hi Lia,
I've a set of Bridgestone 604V's, and they have done 80 000k's so far, give or take the odd yard. They are on an 91 80 series Landcruiser, that tows a horse float, work trailer and our heavy Jayco Swan.
I run them at 42-44psi on the H/way, they have done about 80/20% H/way to gravel traveling, I drop the pressures accordingly as needed. I rotate them every 5000k, I have found them to be a great all round tyre, they may have a another 15K k's left in them. We have a 5500-6000k km trip coming up in September and can't see why they wont do this. I would recommend them as a very good all round tyre. when new they were great off road in the mud, now I choose very carefully were I go now ;)
I will more than likely get them again.
Cheers,
And have a great trip.

Get a good set of all terrain tyres. (AT).
I have Dick Sepec FC11,s on miy Patrol and they are good but a little bit Noisy.
Another Brand would be BFG's.
Maxxis are ok as long as they are Light Truck (LT) and AT.
The list of reasonably good tyres is long however it is your choice and the purses offering.

G'day
I drove myself crazy researching tyres... I have had normal HT factory, Cooper ST, Cooper STT and now BFG KM2's - all in LT construction. I have found the BFG's to be surprisingly good on road and not too loud and very good off road. I haven't had 694's but they do get a very good rap and would no doubt wear longer and behave better on the bitumen than the KM2's. For me, I wasn't too concerned about road noise or wear. I wanted maximum durability off road as
well as the traction that an MT offers off road.
I too live in SA and have two
young rug rats, a 4x4, enjoy a drink and a
camp..
Cheers
Dan

Any of the leading brands are good, 4 points to look...
1) Choose a tyre compatible in size to your 4x4.
2) Choose a tyre to suit your needs and terrain.
3) Choose a tyre to suit your weight requirements.
4) Choose a LT (light truck) constructed tyre over a passenger rated tyre if available.
The more aggressive the tyre tread the more fuel you will use.
On bitumen Highway treaded tyre's will provide more grip and better handling then All terrain and All terrain will provide more grip and better handling on unsealed roads, Mud terrain tyre's grip and handle worse on bitumen and unsealed fast roads but offer better grip in muddy or rocky conditions and are stronger in construction.

Thanks all. The tips are appreciated. Hubby has been reading them all and taking it all in and will hopefully get some new tyres THIS weekend. LOL
