Here is an 8 day option - we usually go thru Vic border track , just for fun on the way.

Fuel at Mt Dare , Birdsville ,Copley, Burra town , Pinnaroo, Melbourne.

Alice leave 6am
Mt Dare Campgrounds
French/Colson JnCamp
Poepells cornerCamp
Birdsville average CV park - plenty camps nearby.
Copley good cv park
Burra Gorge Camp
Vic Border Track - Broken BucketCamp

Melbourne around 1pm ->
but Keep driving to Wonnagatta CV Park south of Dargo arrive 6pm

depends on how many days you have...
last year we went West from Alice towards Hermansburg (sp?) then into the Finke gorge Nat. Park to Boggy Hole. exited the other side of the park on to Ernest Giles Hwy and back onto Stuart Hwy, headed back towards Alice for about 30 klms before turning East to Chambers Pillar. Chambers Pillar down the Old Ghan Line to Mt. Dare (can detour to Lamberts centre of Aust. if you like), visit Dalhousie Springs then through the desert to Birdsville if the water has dropped enough at Eyre Creek for a full crossing (which is a 50 / 50 call this year apparently).
