G'day all

I am in the throes of buying a new vehicle.

So, after deciding on the vehicle I rang a dealer and made enquiries about availablility and a few general questions.
I explained that I would not be purchasing for another 2 months and that I would be getting 2 quotes and the best quote would get my business.

After about another 30 seconds he was telling me that I could take a test drive and if I liked the vehicle we could sign contacts and he would accept a deposit etc.

I thought high pressure sales were a thing of the past, or am I being paranoid?

Which brings me to my question.

Would I be better off getting a car broker like privatefleet to chase the best price or get my 2 quotes from dealers?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I have found that I can normally get a better deal myself than with a broker on new cars if its a straight purchase(I do my home work & play hard ball, always buy towards the end of the month when they have to meet target & will walk if its not the deal I want) but on 2nd hand cars & trucks have always done a lot better through a good broker, but if you have to finance, lease, trade etc... its a different ball game & a good broker will normally do better than you as he should no all the prices to get you the best deal so that he's commission is not painful
Good luck It a buyers market

Thanks Vince

I will be paying cash and have an ABN.

I'll keep in mind the end of the month bit.

I forgot to mention that my nearest dealers are in Tamworth. 1.5hrs north and Maitland 1.5hrs South of Scone.

Boo Boo
also check/research to see what's available as your using a abn, I no that Nissan will offer different deals pending your turnover, when doing your deal & have agreed on price have any extras fitted and payed for on the first service have them charged at full price (not at what you agreed) so car is cheaper etc, less stamp duty/taxes/rego etc (take no prisoners attitude)

I have brought a few new cars Boo Boo and never found any option better than the dealer, however it is vital that you fully research you purchase and then timing is everything !

In my recent purchase , it was probably only ever going to be either the 2 big wagons, I evaluated them as equal performance wise for my purposes and really could have brought either car.

So then I take the time to physically go to some dealers which shows you are serious and you quickly get an idea of the approximate cost.

But you have to know yourself and be absolutely firm that this phase is still research so many have gone in with those intentions and walked out with a car.

I then asked each place what I could do to mimimize the cost , sometimes car companies do give there dealers time limited cost reductions, and there are better times to buy.

Like everything if the cars are scarce or have to be ordered you have less bargaining power.

In my case one of the cars was a run out model advertized at $60,000 I rang back 3 dealers who all said we could probably get it down to around $55,000.

So now its descision time and you have to decide at what price you would be seriously happy with your purchase, as opposed to what you can get ity for.

I then faxed each dealer with my signed offer of $50k so as to put the ball back in their court.

It took a week of hedging before one accepted.

Still find it hard to believe that I brought the basically same car 8 years after the first one for less actual dollars.

Timing is everything - set yourself up to win.

Thanks Robin, very good advice.

I like the idea of sending them a fax with your 'best offer' rather than the other way around.

It probably is a buyers market as it appears that Australians are saving at the moment rather than buying.

Faxing the lowest quote is a tactic I learnt from a broker. Basically fax it to every dealer in the state on a rainy day towards the end of the month.
Good luck

Forgot to add guys, that I put an expiry time limit on any faxed offers - nothing like a bit of incentive.

If you faxed each dealer with an offer of $50,000.00, what would you have done if they had all accepted your offer?

shaker that was what I was going to say.
I know of a guy selling a house privately and negotiating with 2 buyers at once-caught out when both accepted his hardball counteroffer.
Luckily one of the buyers was a bit naive and didnt realize he had him by the curlies.

Id have expected Nissan would have jumped at the deal!

salesman- "We finally got rid of the last of them 4.8's, boss-phew!"
dealer principal- "Na-just heard theres a few more on the next ship"
salesmen- "BUGGER!"

It is certainly risky faxing offers to purchase when even verbal contracts can be binding.
I have to laugh when I read about people thinking they know how to outsmart dealers.

Hi Guys

Thats why my point about having an expiry time on fax and not have concurrent ones
The whole idea is to make it legally binding , only when its real will a dealer go the extra effort.

Mind you getting one 4800 Patrol is probably more than mere mortals deserve , the thought of a couple would be enough to get your heart pumping - or maybe that was from the thought of the fuel bills !

Problem is stock is extremely scarce since the Jap disasters, we have even had dealers trying to buy our rental vehicles back as they can not get stock.
So its going to be hard to get a top deal, sorry for the bad news mate.
